Adirondack brook trout plan proposed, with public invited to comment

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Adirondack Brook Trout Pond Management Plan is getting closer to being realized. DEC recently released a draft version of the plan, which is now available for review and for public comment through June 13.
Among the key regulation proposals in the plan is that the season for Adirondack brook trout ponds will remain April 1 – Oct. 15, and the catch/creel limit will be five fish per-day, of any size.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Lots of fish caught as New York outdoor writers convene in Lewiston

The New York State Outdoor Writers Association, a group formed in 1967, held its Spring Conference in Lewiston, N.Y., May 15-18, 2025. Hosting a writer gathering such as this one is an opportunity for an area to market itself and Destination Niagara USA recognized the value of bringing the group of scribes into Western New York.
“By hosting media like this, we are getting the personal endorsement of some of the top outdoor media professionals in the country,” said Frank Campbell, Outdoor Promotions Director or DNUSA and the Sportfishing Promotion Coordinator for Niagara County.

Conservation groups applaud removal of land sale amendment from House budget bill

National conservation groups were celebrating a major win on Thursday: the withdrawal of provisions in the House budget reconciliation bill – the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1) – that would have authorized the sale of nearly 500,000 acres of public lands in Utah and Nevada.
The provisions, introduced via a late-night amendment during the May 6 House Natural Resources Committee markup of the bill by Representatives Mark Amodei (R-Nev.) and Celeste Maloy (R-Utah), would have set a dangerous precedent for public land policy.

New Cessna 206 promises great changes ahead for how Minnesota DNR does work

From more than a mile away, it can spy loons nesting on a lake below. During the dead of night, it can pick off perpetrators illegally cutting spruce tops and pine boughs from Minnesota forests. And at more than 5,000 feet in altitude, it can pinpoint a “hot spot” in a forest that could blossom into the state’s next big wildfire event.
Meet the Minnesota DNR’s newest and most impressive tool, intended to assist in enforcement activities, wildlife research, fire detection, and much more: a 2024 Cessna 206 loaded with more than 400 pounds of equipment, including a state-of-the art camera system – the MX-10.

Tom Venesky: Color variations add to unpredictability of nature

Sometimes, things occur in nature that smash the norms we are accustomed to. I was reminded by this recently when a friend passed along a photo of a bear with four cubs passing through a backyard in Carbon County, Pa. Now, seeing a bear with four cubs would seem out of the ordinary, but that isn’t what was unusual about the photo.

Outdoor Insights: Current threats to public lands have unified outdoors groups across the political spectrum

Conservation groups have flooded our email boxes at Outdoor News the past two weeks ever since the U.S. House Resources Committee passed a late-night amendment to the reconciliation bill that would sell 460,000 acres of federal property in Utah and Nevada.
Readers may recall that the state of Utah attempted, and failed, to acquire public lands through the courts last year, but the issue keeps rearing its head.
