Ohio’s Outdoor Trailblazers: Sally Biancone fosters a passion through photos

Surveying all that surrounds her on her Athens County, Ohio, property, Sally Biancone can’t help but think about what brought her here.
A talented photographer of all things wild, Biancone first picked up a camera at the age of 15.
“I used a little Instamatic camera and I was always taking pictures of family outings and fishing and camping,” she said. “Then, I started going on big-game hunts with my husband, Steve, with my camera.”

Park Service drops unpopular frozen lake use plan at Minnesota’s Voyageurs National Park

Officials at Voyageurs National Park have scrapped a controversial plan that would have restricted winter vehicle access on the park’s frozen lakes, ending a two-year process that drew sharp criticism from local residents, business owners, and state officials.
The decision, formally announced May 6, came with the termination of an environmental assessment tied to the Frozen Lake Surface Use Plan.

Sight-fishing for bass is a subtle approach that’s great fun

One thing that walleye anglers generally miss out on, for most of their lives, is sight-fishing. That’s a shame, because there are few types of fishing that are more exciting, especially when it comes to bass.
Slowly cruising along in shallow bays while trying to get eyes on a fish and then landing the right cast, before it spooks, is a challenge. But there are ways to increase your odds of a hookup, which all starts with slowing down and really learning to look.

Mike Schoonveld: No more winter magic would be tragic for Great Lakes’ food web

Top researchers are worried that warmer winters will end the annual magic that happens on lakes Michigan and Huron most years.
They don’t call it magic, but I do because one seemingly unbreakable rule of physics gets broken all the time by the most abundant substance on earth – water. The rule is that as things get warmer, they expand and conversely, as they get cooler, they shrink. As stuff swells or shrinks, it becomes more or less dense. This expansion or contraction works at the atomic level and only a physicist could explain it.

Michigan study suggests promise for deer vaccine for bovine tuberculosis

A pilot project last year to vaccinate Michigan deer for bovine tuberculosis is showing promising results for developing another tool to control the spread of the bacterial disease.
In March and April 2024, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources worked with researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Michigan State University, and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on a vaccine field trial in southern Alpena County, one of four counties in the state’s TB zone.

Planer boards are a worthy addition to your angling arsenal once you master the learning curve

Trolling is a great way to cover water when walleyes are scattered over mud flats or if you’re fishing for early-season trout and salmon on Lake Superior before warm water drives them deep.
In those applications, planer boards spread out your lines, allowing you to cover a greater swath of water to find fish. Using planer boards isn’t rocket science, but if you’ve never used them before, there’s a bit of a learning curve. Jason Julien, owner of Church Tackle in Michigan, provided some tips that will benefit novice and experienced planer board users alike.
