Great Lakes’ $7 billion fishing industry may get a reprieve from invasive carp invasion after all

A stalemate between President Donald Trump and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker that threatened a $1.2 billion plan to keep invasive carp from reaching the Great Lakes appears to have been settled after the Trump administration offered assurances it will cover its share of the costs.
After a delay that has stretched on since February, Illinois officials are set to resume closing on property they need to continue work on a project that will generate vast bubble curtains to deter the carp, stun them with electrical fields and play sound frequencies to disorient them.

Decals now available to help protect Lake Superior’s steelhead

As spring fishing ramps up on Lake Superior, anglers are hitting the water in pursuit of steelhead, lake trout, and coho and Chinook salmon. To help protect wild steelhead, Minnesota Sea Grant is distributing free identification decals for a second year to help anglers distinguish between steelhead and other salmon species while they’re on the water.

Minnesota Governor’s opener event highlights angling’s impact

Mike Schwieters, owner of Boyd Lodge in Crosslake, said this past weekend he hadn’t seen such perfect weather for a Minnesota fishing opener since the 1980s, and that he was excited for people to get out on the water for the 77th Governor’s Fishing Opener, this year held in that city, and attended by Gov. Tim Walz and other state officials.
“The purpose of this is really to highlight the outdoor activities,” Walz told Outdoor News regarding the fishing opener tradition.

The Minnesota DNR is inviting citizens to share their thoughts on a draft update of the state’s long-range plan for muskellunge.
“Public input, stakeholder discussions, and conversations with our tribal partners have been critical in shaping the draft plan,” said Leslie George, northeast region fisheries manager. “Before finalizing the plan for muskie management moving forward, we want to ensure that we consider the perspectives and opportunities desired by our constituents.”

Minnesota DNR grants non-exclusive lease to dog clubs at Keystone WMA

Since April 15, the Minnesota Federation of Field Trial Clubs, Inc., a group of various dog clubs in Minnesota, has been operating under a non-exclusive lease to access, field-trial, and train their dogs on Keystone Woods Wildlife Management Area in the northeast Twin Cities metro area. The lease allows the clubs to access about 340 acres of Keystone’s 1,820 acres until Aug. 31, 2025, before fall hunting begins.
“Having access to this land and the thought of losing it is why we’re fighting so hard,” said Pete Aplikowski, president of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association in Minnesota, one of the federation’s members.

Proponents and opponents have differing opinions on what mink bill in Illinois aims to do

Ranched mink are frequently mentioned in Illinois Outdoor News’ Fur Market Reports, as farmed mink have a direct impact on wild fur markets.
But mink ranching is now in the news in the state for a different reason. Although the industry has self-imposed guidelines farmers adhere to in order to sell their pelts legally, mink farming is not regulated at the federal level or in Illinois. But a bill in play in Springfield could change that.
