Commentary: Trump to scrap Biden-era rule that elevated conservation on public lands

At an all-hands meeting of Interior Department employees last week, Secretary Doug Burgum stressed that managing and protecting federal public lands “must be held in balance.”
“It says in the mission statement the job of Interior is to ‘manage and protect,’” he said. “It doesn’t just say ‘protect,’ it says ‘manage and protect.’”
Better balance on public lands was precisely what the Biden administration was after with a rule it finalized last year.

Jeff Frischkorn: Where is the ‘bonus money’ going from state park fracking in Ohio?

When the Ohio General Assembly and the Mike DeWine Administration crafted the state’s pro-fracking initiative, the cherry on top was how 30% of all the so-called “bonus money” goes back to the impacted state park or wildlife area.
Such an infusion of cash was earmarked for capital improvements at the specific park or wildlife area. Yet I would bet that folks would not believe that half of the $20 million taken from the Ohio DNR’s Land Royalty Fund would go to Salt Fork State Park’s publicly owned/privately run lodge for “upgrades to the rooms.”

‘Do-not-eat’ fish advisories announced on heels of tests for PFAS in Minnesota

Most Minnesota anglers have made it common practice to know, or to check on, special regulations for lakes and rivers they intend to fish. But how many take the extra step to determine if state officials have issued consumption advisories regarding the fish that might be caught in those waters?
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recently issued a news release announcing updates to fish consumption advisories for a number of water bodies in the state, including “do-not-eat” advisories suggesting “everyone to completely avoid eating certain fish.”

A Q-and-A with pro angler and Ohioan Bill Lowen in the midst of a bounce-back season

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Bill Lowen entered the 2025 tournament season carrying the memory of his disappointing performance on the 2024 Bassmaster Elite tour. Instead of focusing on a bass on the end of his line, he feared the weight at his line’s end could be his career.
“My finish for the 2024 season standings was the worst of my career,” acknowledged the Brookville, Indiana, resident who is a Buckeye native. Lowen explained that his performance on the Elite tour had started taking a downward trend after he secured his first blue trophy at Pickwick Lake in 2021.

Michigan NRC considering changes to state’s fall wild turkey hunt

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has changed its philosophy about the purpose of the fall turkey season and has proposed regulation changes that emphasize recreational opportunity over management objectives.
“We took a look at the whole picture and Michigan has historically claimed that fall season is about population management and nuisance control,” said Adam Bump, the upland bird specialist with the DNR’s Wildlife Division.

Pet deer ‘Baby’ from Pennsylvania still in custody after being confiscated

Tammy Shiery, of Fayette County, has suffered a setback in her quest to be reunited with a young white-tailed deer she named Baby.
Just before an April 3 court hearing on a petition for return of property, Shiery’s attorney, Vince Tiberi, withdrew the petition “because of a technicality in the way it was filed” said Shiery, 64, of Bullskin Township, indicating that she could not provide further details.

Ohio’s JROTC sporter final at Camp Perry is a female affair

It’s fitting that the 2025 JROTC Three-Position National Championship was held at the twilight of Women’s History Month, with six of the eight individuals in the sporter final being female athletes as well as seven of the eight in the precision final.
In the end, two of those talented ladies rose to victory in their respective classes after an exciting neck-and-neck contest on the firing line.
