Minnesota Senate bill would limit authority of DNR conservation officers

According to the bill’s language, without consent, a warrant, or court order, a Minnesota DNR conservation officer wouldn’t be able to seize or confiscate wild animals, wild rice, or other aquatic vegetation, firearms, bows, arrows, or other equipment that someone used unlawfully to take animals, wild rice, or vegetation. On Thursday, March 20, the Senate Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee heard legislation that would limit the scope of enforcement activity that Minnesota DNR conservation officers could carry out.
The bill, S.F. 956, as proposed, would require DNR conservation officers to get a warrant, court order, or consent from an individual who is being searched before proceeding with various tasks while on the job. The bill is directed specifically at conservation officers for these changes, not county sheriffs’ deputies or local law enforcement.
