Spring snow goose migration moves quickly as birds reach the Dakotas

That other March Madness – the annual spring snow goose migration and the hunting season that comes with it – is well under way, with birds already moving deep into North Dakota.
During the past week across the Great Plains, the midcontinent flock of lesser snow geese has been pushing north, with the highest concentrations of snows, blues, and Ross’ geese staging in several northern-latitude states, including South Dakota. But as of Tuesday morning, geese were still being reported as far south as Arkansas.

Streams of Thought: Unless things change, anglers can expect extra costs, headaches crossing Canadian border this summer

The annual – mostly, but for a few interruptions – sojourn my friends and I make to Ontario to fish each spring has, over the years, come with a hiccup or two when crossing the border between the United States and Canada.
There was the delay for my brother’s high school graduation in the late 1990s. The rest of the gang apparently preferred an extra day of fishing to my swell company on the road trip, so I drove solo a day in their rearviews.

Ilion, N.Y., moving forward a year after Remington plant closes

John Burns worked at the Remington Arms plant in Ilion (Herkimer County, N.Y) for 13 years, working his way up the ranks through various maintenance and supervisory positions.
But when the legendary gun maker ran into financial troubles – including a period where Burns and the rest of the staff were laid off before eventually being called back – Burns realized he needed some stability in his life and a reliable job.
“I saw the writing on the wall,” said Burns.
Ever since Eliphalet Remington II moved his 12-year-old gun-making business to a 200-acre site along the Erie Canal in 1828, the presence of one of the most iconic names in firearms in Ilion for nearly two centuries gave the village of 7,600 people a unique distinction.

Grueling lake effect storms take a toll on structures in parts of New York

There have been plenty of remarks about a lack of snow in recent years in places like New York. Well, it appears that most of those people have been pretty quiet about it lately.
One of the things associated with cold weather and snow has been the threat to roofs collapsing or leaking. Even those places where the weather has been relatively mild have had to deal with this problem. Starting with places like central New York, which hasn’t had to deal with much, they have been cautious. Then you contrast the snow belt areas where in eight days they received 10 feet of snow and you can see that there is a problem.

Dean Bortz: Habitat stamp, white deer just two issues up for April 14 review in Wisconsin

As most sportsmen know by now, Wisconsin’s annual fish and game rule change process sort of kicks off each year on the second Monday of April during the annual spring fish and game hearings.
That’s when the DNR and Conservation Congress come together in each county to review proposed DNR rule changes, DNR advisory questions, Natural Resources Board advisory questions, and congress advisory questions.
