Wisconsin man builds incredible ‘Possum Lodge’ full of hunting, angling memories

Wayne Whitemarsh’s “Possum Lodge” is many things. Man cave. Wildlife museum. Hall of taxidermy. A portal into North America’s wild past. It’s a curated collection of every conceivable pelt, trap, mount and lure, each with a poignant backstory Whitemarsh can summon and recount at will.
A visiting 3-year-old looked up in awe and stated: “It’s like being inside a tackle box!”

Wisconsin DNR asks duck hunters to choose one of four hunting zone options

The DNR’s waterfowl team is asking Wisconsin duck hunters to comment on their preferred “zone structure” out of four options being considered for use from 2026-31 – and whether the north/south zone boundary should be moved from Hwy. 10 to Hwy. 64.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) would allow split seasons (mid-season closures) to be used if hunters opt for two or three zones; however, the USFWS will not allow a split season in any zone if Wisconsin opts to go with four zones.

Patrick Durkin: Wisconsin boy skips a day of school, spears sturgeon, making for quite a story

School administrators likely pondered whether to change Warren Nelson’s absence Feb. 10 from “illness” to “unexcused” when learning the boy speared a sturgeon that morning on Lake Winneconne during Wisconsin’s Winnebago system’s 16-day season.
That’s all right, of course. Most Wisconsinites get it. We’d have to look long and hard to find a hunter, trapper or angler who never skipped school at least once when the outdoors beckoned.

North Dakota celebrates 50 years of bighorn sheep hunting

Fifty years ago, North Dakota reintroduced bighorn sheep hunting, launching a conservation success story that continues today.
In 1975, the state held its first modern hunting season, selecting 12 hunters from a pool of 2,852 applicants. Last year, six hunters were chosen from 19,557 resident applicants and 334 nonresident applicants, while a seventh tag was auctioned off at the Wild Sheep Foundation’s Midwest Chapter banquet.

Throwback weedless spoons are great for bass in early spring

The weedless spoon is a beautiful classic, yet its simple, engaging luster shines much brighter than a mere show-only, mothballed antique. The single-hooked, plated metal lure stirs in me some thrilling memories and warm, nostalgic thoughts when gazed upon and knotted to a line.
My aunt introduced them to me, doling out a few Johnson Silver Minnows to her rookie nephew for catching redfish in the tidal rivers of South Carolina, 30-some years ago. I quickly became a weedless spoon fan, and its magic easily translated to freshwater fish in Pennsylvania.

Steve Pollick: Fed layoffs pose a lot of questions for Ohio’s outdoors

The sweeping cuts to federal natural resource employees has succeeded in sewing chaos and confusion, fear, anxiety, and uncertainty among federal public lands and outdoors-related agencies, offices, programs, and more with their stream of staffing and other cuts and edicts in recent weeks.
Ohio outdoors folks will see the results here as the weeks and months unfold. But trying to swallow it all in one gulp is like trying to drink from a fire hose.

Search with purpose, and you can add to – or start – your shed antler collection

It’s been said that looking for shed deer antlers is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I know people who have hunted deer for decades but who’ve never found a shed. The reason is probably twofold: One, they don’t try, and two, they don’t know where to look.
While you might occasionally stumble upon an antler without looking for it, for the most part, you have to actively search for antlers to find them. And even then, it’s not uncommon to come home empty-handed.
