Try using subtle baits boldly for late-summer bass

Among my fondest fishing memories are late summer days catching bass on some of Pennsylvania’s clearest waters. Keystone Power Dam and East Branch Dam are still bodies that come to mind, along with flows such as the Juniata, Kiskiminestas, and Conemaugh rivers.
These waters have been for many years and remain my summertime amusement parks. Yet, their clear waters presents quite a conundrum for anglers.

Throwback weedless spoons are great for bass in early spring

The weedless spoon is a beautiful classic, yet its simple, engaging luster shines much brighter than a mere show-only, mothballed antique. The single-hooked, plated metal lure stirs in me some thrilling memories and warm, nostalgic thoughts when gazed upon and knotted to a line.
My aunt introduced them to me, doling out a few Johnson Silver Minnows to her rookie nephew for catching redfish in the tidal rivers of South Carolina, 30-some years ago. I quickly became a weedless spoon fan, and its magic easily translated to freshwater fish in Pennsylvania.

Conemaugh River at Blairsville, Pa., is a bass factory

Although, as a major drainage of those coal-rich hills, parts of the Conemaugh still display ugly signs of residual pollution from mining. But like its kin, the Kiskiminetas River, it continues cleaning up nicely through public and private efforts, providing anglers and river enthusiasts another waterway for enjoyment.

Keep it simple when it comes to catching Pennsylvania’s river smallmouths in the spring

“Simplicity is hard. It’s easier to over-complicate things,” a British comedian once quipped. I’m not sure if he is a fisherman, but his quote fairly describes my and a lot of other anglers’ tactical approach on too many days.
Last spring, however, when I unexpectedly found a few hours to dip my kayak in Pennsylvania’s Conemaugh River on a sunny Saturday afternoon, there was no time for complication.
