Superior National Forest’s bear order appears to be reducing conflicts

This past year in northern Minnesota brought plenty of weather extremes, from a record mild winter to record June rain, followed by a worsening drought. Such conditions made it a tough one for the region’s bear population, which relies heavily on natural foods that rarely produce well under extreme conditions.
The limited natural foods prompted a sharp increase in bear nuisance reports across northern Minnesota – except for within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, where a new wilderness-wide order designed to reduce human-bear interactions may have helped keep this longstanding problem in check.

DNR says Minnesota’s wolf population likely stable in size, range, though subtle changes emerge

What makes the annual wolf survey in Minnesota a bit more unique this year is that the DNR collared more wolves than normal to see if the wolf range has shifted since last checked during the 2017-2018 winter survey.
“We try and re-delineate where the wolf range is,” said John Erb, DNR wildlife research scientist. “In between those five years, we just keep packs collared and get pack and territory size data, but we assume the range is the same as what it was from previous survey.”

Video: 4,700 rainbows stocked in Pennsylvania’s Frances Slocum Lake

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) stocked approximately 4,700 Rainbow and golden Rainbow Trout at Frances Slocum Lake in Luzerne County this week.
Because the lake remains frozen, a hole had to be cut into the ice so the trout could be stocked using a hose connected to the hatchery truck. Some of the larger trophy-sized fish were placed in the lake using nets.

Mille Lacs Fisheries Committee pushes for three-walleye limit at start of opener-water season

Unlike a typical February gathering of the Mille Lacs Fisheries Advisory Committee during which the Minnesota DNR officials come to the table with the allotted walleye poundage the state can take for the coming season, this winter’s meeting was slightly different.
Because the DNR and Ojibwe bands with Mille Lacs fishing rights are currently negotiating on what that poundage could be – not only for next season, but a potential, multi-season agreement – discussion focused on what MLFAC members would like to see regarding walleye regulations, without DNR estimates ready.

Wild game dinner in rural Pennsylvania offers guests a unique mixed menu

The buffet line inside the fire hall in rural Pennsylvania was a familiar sight last weekend as a crowd of about 150 people heaped dinner onto their plates before sitting down to eat, hear a little live music and wait for the raffle.
Aside from a couple of vegetable dishes that were largely ignored, the food being served at the Taste of the Wild Outdoors dinner inside the Pine Grove Hose, Hook and Ladder Fire Company was not standard fare for most.
