DNR says Minnesota’s wolf population likely stable in size, range, though subtle changes emerge

DNR researchers this year are attempting to determine if the range of wolves has expanded in the state. Indications are, very little, if much at all. (Stock photo)

What makes the annual wolf survey in Minnesota a bit more unique this year is that the DNR collared more wolves than normal to see if the wolf range has shifted since last checked during the 2017-2018 winter survey.
“We try and re-delineate where the wolf range is,” said John Erb, DNR wildlife research scientist. “In between those five years, we just keep packs collared and get pack and territory size data, but we assume the range is the same as what it was from previous survey.”
