Steve Pollick: Being an Ohio eagle watcher is its own reward

Being a volunteer bald eagle nest-watcher is not as lonely a duty as an old-time forest ranger sitting up in his fire tower, or a solo Arctic fur-taker running his trapline in the dead of winter, but eagle watching is indeed a solitary activity.
I have invested some time this winter as a nest-watch volunteer in Sandusky County, Ohio, after some years’ pause following work in a research program. And as I sit in my SUV, spotting scope mounted in the driver’s window, scanning a nest and its neighborhood for activity, I have some reflection time.

No homefield advantage for team USA at World Ice Fishing Championship in Michigan

Although Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is 4,526 miles from Tamarack Lake in Lakeview Mich., anyone still awake in Vilnius when the final bell signaled the end of this year’s World Ice Fishing Championship probably could have heard the triumphant shouts and cheers of the Lithuanian Ice Fishing Team as they sealed their victory and repeated as world champions.
The World Ice Fishing Championship (WIFC) represents the highest level of competitive ice fishing in the world.

Sharpshooters to cull deer at 2 Pittsburgh parks

Despite declaring the second year of controlled bowhunting in city parks a success, officials in Pittsburgh have enlisted federal sharpshooters to cull deer through the end of March in the two largest parks.
Although 50 archers had harvested a total of 199 whitetails in Frick, Riverview, Schenley, Highland, and Emerald View parks when the season ended Jan. 25, marksmen from the U.S. Department of Agriculture were slated to begin performing night-time targeted removal in Frick and Riverview the week of Feb. 11.

Is a spring steelhead season to remember coming on Lake Erie tributaries?

The outlook for the spring 2025 steelhead fishery is mixed. My 40 years of experience fishing the tributaries signals that it could be exceptional. I believe the poor fishery experienced last autumn and winter should indicate there will be more leftover fish this spring, but a Lake Erie biologist believes I might be overly optimistic.
Steelhead were plenty, but Mother Nature had plans of her own. Steelheads usually run rampant in October, but last fall they were stacked up in the big lake, waiting for the tributaries to swell with water.

Suspect charged in theft cases from remote Michigan campgrounds

A Michigan Department of Natural Resources investigation resulted in criminal charges against a man that conservation officers allege they caught stealing from rustic campground pay pipes.
Conservation officers in June launched an investigation into suspected thefts from multiple primitive camp sites in Luce County, which use self-registrations deposited into locked metal pipes that are later recovered by DNR staff.

Mike Schoonveld: Would selling fish be a problem or a solution for Michigan?

I was at an after-dinner gathering of fishermen hailing from several states recently. It was what many would call a “bull session” where fishing tales, opinions, jokes, and other more or less important discussions flowed freely.
One of the participants, a resident of New York, said something about selling a bucket of perch. It wasn’t the point of his story, just a sidebar, but it caught my attention.
“Back up,” I said. “You sold a bucket of perch… perch you’d caught yourself? Is that legal?”
