15 wolves from Canada released into Colorado under voter-approved initiative

A second group of wolves has been released in Colorado as part of a controversial, voter-driven initiative to reintroduce the predators to the state.
Fifteen gray wolves from Canada were set free in the central mountains over three days last week, but state wildlife officials did not announce the operation until Sunday, a day after it was completed. Colorado Parks and Wildlife noted in its announcement that its offices had been watched and that staff safety had been at risk, noting threatening phone calls and social media posts.

Public has opportunity to weigh in on elk restoration in northeast Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, in coordination with other Tribal entities, local governments, landowners and other stakeholders, has kicked off public engagement on the Northeast Omashkooz (elk) Restoration and Management Plan.
Consistent with direction and funding provided by the Minnesota Legislature in 2023, the Minnesota DNR is working to support the Fond du Lac Band in restoring elk to the Fond du Lac Reservation and the surrounding portions of the 1854 Ceded Territory.

Jeremiah Haas: Closing the book on another old buck

Last year, in late February, I wrote an article about the joys of knowing your wildlife –  specifically, having a history with a particular deer.
That article was about a deer we named “Bladerunner” due to his bladed brow tines, which started to show prominently at age 3. Ultimately, we would find his full set of antlers at ages 3, 6, and 7, with one side his 4th and 5th year.

Ryan Rothstein: Hunters, DNR both have work to do in managing Minnesota’s deer herd

I didn’t even realize it until I saw the email blast, but we’re already at the midpoint of the DNR’s 10-year deer management plan, which was finalized in 2018. I’m still deciding if that means time flies when you’re having fun, or if I’m just getting old.
In the meantime, I sifted through this detailed halfway report, and here’s what I found.

Commentary: Re-imagining wetland restoration in Minnesota that’s good for wildlife and people

We all need food, water, and shelter to survive, and that’s true for ducks, too. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is now advancing an effort in Minnesota to restore and enhance wetlands on federal waterfowl production areas (there are hundreds in the state).
Here’s how the USFWS is working with Ducks Unlimited to bring more small, seasonal wetlands to Minnesota’s prairie and grasslands in a way that’s good for wildlife and for people.

CWD expands its presence into Morrow County, Ohio

Though the prevalence remains low, chronic wasting disease (CWD) in Ohio has now expanded into Morrow County, according to the ODNR Division of Wildlife.
An adult doe harvested by a hunter on Delaware Wildlife Area during gun season tested positive for the fatal malady, said Gary Comer, wildlife management supervisor for the Division of Wildlife in Central Ohio. The hunter had submitted the doe’s head for testing at one of the Division of Wildlife’s kiosks for voluntary testing, said Comer.
