Michigan managers upbeat about increase in deer tags sold but skeptical it’s a long-term trend

Hunting license sales are up for the second consecutive year in Michigan, but officials aren’t optimistic the trend will continue long term.
Through Jan. 15, the number of individuals who purchased a deer hunting license was 1.7% higher than the same date last year, with 604,005 buyers in the 2024-25 season, versus 593,877 in 2023-24, Brian Frawley, survey coordinator for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, told Michigan Outdoor News.

Environmentalists say Trump’s energy order would subvert the Endangered Species Act

Environmental groups concerned about loss of protections for vanishing animals see one of President Donald Trump’s early executive orders as a method of subverting the Endangered Species Act in the name of fossil fuel extraction and corporate interests.
Trump declared an energy emergency via executive order earlier this week amid a promise to “drill, baby, drill.” One section of the order states that the long-standing Endangered Species Act can’t be allowed to serve as an obstacle to energy development.

Wisconsin study shows CWD greatly reduces annual survival rates in deer, suppresses population growth

Results from the Wisconsin DNR’s largest deer and chronic wasting disease (CWD) study ever undertaken show that the disease substantially reduces deer survival rates, and suppresses deer population growth.
Dr. Dan Storm, DNR ungulate research scientist, reported the results of the seven-year study in southwest Wisconsin to the Natural Resources Board Jan. 22.
“People should expect to see fewer deer in areas of high CWD prevalence,” Storm said. “Deer are not going to go extinct, but there will be fewer of them.”
