Speak their language: Know these buck vocalizations in the whitetail world

In my early years of hunting whitetails, I would never go afield without a grunt call. And during every minute of my hunt, that small plastic tube would burn a hole in my pocket, begging to be used.
I could typically resist until what I felt was the right moment, but when boredom set in, all bets were off. While trying to “make my own luck,” I would throw out every kind of vocalization imaginable with the thoughts of a giant buck on the next ridge over beelining to calls. However, this was never the case.
It took far too long for my childish mind to understand that there’s more to calling in whitetail bucks than simply blowing on a grunt tube and hoping for the best.

December roosters are escape artists; here’s how to outsmart them

By this time of the season, the dumb roosters are dead. Some soaked up a load of 6s, some got picked off by avian predators, and some probably met their demise in more bland but equally effective ways.
The birds that are left now are the survivors – at least that’s the case on ground with hunting pressure. And because a lot of pheasant hunting happens on public dirt, that means a lot of the birds that we have access to are not just going to hop into our game bags.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: Rock Creek Conservation Club ‘turkey shoots’ are a time-honored tradition

They don’t really shoot turkeys anymore.
In fact, with today’s turkey shoots many organizers don’t even dole out hams, much less, frozen Butterballs. Instead, a winner may walk home with pork chops, baby-back ribs, a side of bacon, veal patties, shrimp, or even gift cards.
Recently, my wife, Bev, and I handed over nine bucks each to participate in my sportsmen’s club’s annual Thanksgiving Day eve turkey shoot. The Ashtabula County’s Rock Creek Conservation Club in Ohio has facilitated this shoot for longer than anyone can remember.

New York DEC mourns the loss of Region 1 K9 that was just 18 months old

In 2016 the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Division of Law Enforcement expanded its K9 program, adding a K9 team to Region 1 on Long Island. This first of its kind Marine K9 in New York proved to be widely successful in assisting the Environmental Conservation Officers in protecting marine resources in the region.
Sadly, on Nov. 22 the K9 Unit suffered a tragic loss when its new replacement Marine K9, known as KI, passed away suddenly shortly after reporting to Long Island in September.

Goose hunting in Illinois has shifted south to north

There was a time in the not-too-distant past when southern Illinois was considered a mecca for Canada goose hunting, and clubs in the area would be packed with hunters from all over the Midwest and beyond during goose season.
The thousands of Canada geese that gathered in southern Illinois in the fall and winter made that region fertile ground for honing the finer details of honker hunting.
