A “soft opening” of new trails at Sahara Woods State Recreation Area in Saline County are taking place through Jan. 27, DNR announced.

Missouri finds likely bird flu cases among snow geese

The Missouri Conservation Department received confirmation of something it feared – three dead snow geese found by state wildlife refuge staff were likely infected with bird flu.
Samples from the birds – two recovered in Henry County and one in Vernon County – were reported as “non-negative” for avian influenza after testing at the University of Missouri Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, said Deb Hudman, supervisor of the department’s wildlife health program. The announcement was made on Dec. 10.

Farm Bureau’s new policy calls for extended Illinois deer season to boost harvest

Some in Illinois are longing for the days when the deer season deer kill eclipsed 100,000 and the total take reached more than twice that.
And it’s not just hunters wanting a return to the six-figure harvest. While gun hunters took advantage of favorable weather and an active deer herd to shoot 27,835 whitetails in the second weekend of the firearms season, boosting the total 2024 gun harvest to 82,496 – a nice bump from the 76,494 taken is 2023 – farmers whose operations are affected by deer are calling for more, more and more.

Oak Duke: A last bit of December rut action in New York

From my precarious perch in a ridge-top oak tree, I watched four big bucks work out their breeding ritual. The center of their rapt attention…a tiny doe, in the corner of a field. The diminutive size of the doe amplified the buck’s size, as back then I was under the mistaken idea that mature bucks only bred mature does.
Back in those years, now 40 years ago, I was hunting with a right-handed 70-pound draw Howard Hill longbow, and the tending, breeding group I observed occurred during the short, mid-December extended archery season here in New York state back then.

Wisconsin DNR confirms CWD in wild deer for the first time in Menominee County

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) confirmed the first positive test result for chronic wasting disease (CWD) in a wild deer in Menominee County.
The deer was a hunter-harvested 2-year-old buck and is the first confirmed wild CWD-positive deer detected in Menominee County. The deer was harvested within 10 miles of the Oconto and Shawano County borders.
