What’s the process of a whitetail’s antler growth? It’s a 120-day marathon

He seemed to appear out of nowhere. I was scanning the overgrown pasture from my observation point when I spotted two giant, velvet-covered main beams hovering above the tall grass about 100 yards in the distance. Even now, I’m still not sure where he came from. All I knew in the moment was that I was watching the biggest buck I had ever seen … or at least I thought.

Did you eat tag soup this past deer season? Take stock of why

For my first five deer seasons, I ate tag soup. To say the least, this was a very humbling and frustrating beginning.
I had sold myself on the idea that to become a man, one had to be a proficient deer hunter and to end five seasons without filling a tag made me feel like a family failure. Though I eventually began knocking down my share of bucks, still, whenever I would finish out a season with the “you’ll get ‘em next year” speech, I would revert back to that insecure kid who counted fruitless days afield as a loss.

Speak their language: Know these buck vocalizations in the whitetail world

In my early years of hunting whitetails, I would never go afield without a grunt call. And during every minute of my hunt, that small plastic tube would burn a hole in my pocket, begging to be used.
I could typically resist until what I felt was the right moment, but when boredom set in, all bets were off. While trying to “make my own luck,” I would throw out every kind of vocalization imaginable with the thoughts of a giant buck on the next ridge over beelining to calls. However, this was never the case.
It took far too long for my childish mind to understand that there’s more to calling in whitetail bucks than simply blowing on a grunt tube and hoping for the best.

Commentary: Is it time to ban baiting for deer in Ohio?

There was quite a stir on social media last month regarding Ohio’s stance on baiting for white-tailed deer. This all began when Hunters Advocate of Ohio (HAO) founders Kevin and Javin Mullet were guests on the HUNTR podcast. During the three-hour conversation, HAO was given the floor to not only express their concerns about baiting in Ohio, but how their newfound organization is fighting to get it banned.
I spoke with Kevin Mullet, president of HAO, to provide further context on why he believes baiting needs to go, how HAO plans to see it banned, and the current status of this process.

Keep your broadheads sharp this season

At the start of archery season every fall, most deer hunters (myself included) are crazy with hubris. We take to the deer woods with an almost tangible feeling that this season is the one – this will be the year that a world-class white-tailed buck will meet its demise via my arrow.
Because of this, we make sure to have everything in place for when that once-in-a-lifetime moment is upon us. All the while, our broadheads sit untouched in our bow cases. While a broadhead may be the single smallest piece of equipment you’ll tote to the woods this fall, when the chips are down, this tiny piece of metal will be the only thing standing between you and the potential buck of a lifetime.

Deerassic Park, and it’s impressive whitetail Hall of Fame, great place to visit for deer junkies

The off-season for a serious whitetail hunter can be a grim time of year. Long days and hot temperatures push the mind longingly back to crisp fall mornings and big bucks, despite deer season still being many weeks away. It’s a deer hunters version of the “summer blues,” if you will.
In an attempt to satisfy these longings, some revisit trail camera photos from years past and look to the season ahead, while others try filling their time with other season-appropriate activities. But if you’re in the area of Cambridge, Ohio, there’s a place where all blue whitetail junkies can get their fix.

Summer scouting could lead to your fall whitetail

Despite bow season being a few months away, for a serious whitetail nut it’s never too soon to develop a strategy for the upcoming season. Especially when there are nuggets of knowledge out there capable of enabling your success this fall.
Off-season scouting is a major building block for a hunter’s success in the whitetail woods. Though most scouting is typically done in the spring, the summer months can present real-time info about where the bucks are now.
