December roosters are escape artists; here’s how to outsmart them

If you’re interested in a buzzer-beater limit of roosters on pressured hunting ground, forget about marching directly through the cover. Instead, angle your way through it, and don’t forget to work the parts of the sloughs that seem featureless. (Contributed photos)

By this time of the season, the dumb roosters are dead. Some soaked up a load of 6s, some got picked off by avian predators, and some probably met their demise in more bland but equally effective ways.
The birds that are left now are the survivors – at least that’s the case on ground with hunting pressure. And because a lot of pheasant hunting happens on public dirt, that means a lot of the birds that we have access to are not just going to hop into our game bags.
