Outdoor Insights: Why can’t deer build immunity to CWD?

My son and I were lamenting how the deer permit area we hunt in southeast Minnesota suddenly has become ground zero for new chronic wasting disease infections.
As of Tuesday, Dec. 17, there were 81 new CWD cases in Minnesota this year, a 69% increase from the 48 found in 2023. All but one have been in roughly a half dozen DPAs in the southeast, and the DNR has called the increase “statistically significant.”
For years, the state has done a solid job of suppressing and preventing CWD from becoming the disaster we see across the Mississippi, but I fear 2024 marks a tipping point in this losing battle.

Hunters Helping Lenawee initiative helping feed those needing help in Michigan

It is said that hunters are our nation’s largest group of conservationists. Hunters in Lenawee County Michigan are helping to affirm that statement.
Lenawee County is nestled between Monroe and Hillsdale counties bordering Ohio in southeast Michigan.
This area of Michigan boasts the highest volume of land under till in the state. The harvest of corn and soybeans in these counties often leads the state in grain production. Lenawee County’s abundant crops help grow large numbers of and large bodied white-tailed deer.

Ohio aquaculture just a small part of Ohio’s ag

The mission of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program, which is headquartered at Ohio State University in Columbus and operates F. T. Stone Laboratory at Put-in- Bay, is education, research and outreach.
This summer, Ohio Sea Grant hosted a conference, called “Discover Ohio Aquaculture,” which brought producers, stakeholders, and decision-makers together to discuss the current state of Ohio’s aquaculture industry. There, members learned that 30 species of fish were raised in the state. One of the presenters then was Aquaculture Extension Specialist Nicole Wright, who gave a brief overview of the topic to an online audience called “Fish Farming, Food Systems, and Recreation Aquaculture in Ohio.”

Ben Moyer: Merits of a longer, limited deer season in Pennsylvania

By many measures, deer season 2024 was a good one. It was the first one in recent memory when our group wasn’t buying bags of ice to stuff inside our kills. Most of Pennsylvania had snow on the ground through the entire first week (Some locations had too much), and ideal temperatures allowed you to hang a deer and take your time with the processing without concerns about the meat freezing solid.
No matter the weather, deer season is an enjoyable and even a festive event in our state. Still, there’s a nagging sense that deer season might be able to accomplish more in a practical way toward easing Pennsylvania farmers’ serious problem of crop damage by deer.
