Three ways to (sort of) beat a buck’s nose

Every whitetail hunter should be obsessed with wind direction, and anything they can do to cut down on their scent signature on stand. It’s also important to reduce your scent impact when you’re walking into, and out of, your setups. It’s hard to beat knee-high rubber boots for this task. Spray them liberally with scent-eliminating spray before every hunt, and you’ll educate fewer deer during your sits. (Contributed photos)

Scent control has been a hot topic in deer hunting for a long, long time. In fact, it was probably a real concern even as far back as when we were wearing animal hides and hucking spears at critters.
Modern deer hunters obsess over this aspect as well, but it’s still up for debate whether you can actually beat a buck’s nose. Plenty of hunters think that you really can’t, and that if a deer gets downwind, it’s pretty much game over. But downwind at 15 yards is different from downwind at 50.
