Hatchlings of aging bigmouth buffalo floundering in Minnesota’s Rice Lake

For many years, Sam Seybold, buffer specialist with the Aitkin County Soil and Water Conservation District, spear-fished for bigmouth buffalo in Minnesota’s Rice Lake.
“I noticed that the number (of bigmouth buffalo) seemed to be less and less, and I’d never see any young ones, small ones, or anything. I noticed that would be something that was somewhat concerning,” Seybold said.
He reached out to Dr. Alec Lackmann, an ichthyologist (fish researcher) with the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Swenson College of Science and Engineering, who previously had studied bigmouth buffalo.

Devotion to avian conservation earns West Salem couple Illinois DNR volunteer award

A focus on owls, ospreys – and prairie chickens, too – has earned Robert and Marcia Shelby recognition from avian ecologists, wildlife biologists, and birdwatchers statewide.
Work by the West Salem couple also earned them the title of  DNR “Volunteers of the Year” for 2024.

Fox River fish expected to benefit from dam removal project in Carpentersville, Ill.

A $1.2 million project to remove the Carpentersville Dam in Illinois will create a 10.2-mile unimpeded stretch of the Fox River, a stretch that is expected to benefit both fish and recreational kayak and canoe users.
Work was scheduled to begin this month. The removal project is expected to be finished in November.

Minnesota DNR reminds deer hunters of changes in the northeast

The Minnesota DNR is reminding hunters of a variety of deer hunting-related changes in effect for the upcoming seasons in northeast Minnesota.
The annual city of Grand Rapids special deer hunt began with the start of the archery season (Sept. 14) and continues through rifle and muzzleloader seasons, and ends Tuesday, Dec. 31. All deer one year or older harvested during the city deer hunt are required to be sampled for chronic wasting disease.
