Minnesota DNR to launch changes to muskie-stocking regimen

With more and more information lately to consider, the Minnesota DNR is rethinking its approach to muskie stocking across the state as a means to promote lower mortality rates and overall population improvement.
“(We’re) working toward a more efficient program and producing and stocking a product that is going to survive and recruit to the fishery and at the end of an angler’s hook, potentially,” said Leslie George, the DNR’s northeast regional fisheries manager.
Data to improve muskie fisheries across the state point to a distinct answer for the DNR.

Minnesota citizen advisory group gives final report to DNR, state legislators

In what will be its final report to the Minnesota DNR and state legislators, the members of the DNR’s citizen advisory group, the Game and Fish Budgetary Oversight Committee, recommended the agency continue to advocate for state wolf management, create a swan-hunting season, continue to seek long-term alternatives to keep healthy the Game and Fish Fund, and more.
Per 2024 legislation, the BOC, in its current form since 2011, will cease to exist, replaced by a DNR commissioner-appointed committee of at least 15 members – some of whom may come from the existing committees. The DNR currently is seeking applicants for the new committee.

Early bird hunting in Minnesota just OK despite excellent weather

Adam Kleinschmidt wasn’t messing around.
Last Sunday, he was up at 2 a.m. An hour and a half later, he was paddling his decoy-packed kayak in a public marsh complex in Stevens County. Unlike last year’s oppressive conditions of 85 degrees and humid, this year’s early teal opener was beyond pleasant: 50 degrees and sunny at shooting time, with just enough wind to move the decoys.

Historic storm ravages Suffolk County’s north shore in New York

Along the north shore of Long Island’s Suffolk County from the town of Huntington to Orient Point there is no lack of outdoor opportunities, including fishing, hunting, hiking, and boating.  This includes the historic, and normally bucolic Nissequogue River watershed.
Beginning on the evening of Sunday, Aug. 18, and continuing into Monday morning the Nissequogue, its surrounding communities, and the neighboring Town of Brookhaven experienced one of the most devastating storms in over 300 years.

A cinnamon twist arrives in Illinois as hunters get ready for early teal season

The Illinois early teal season has long been a battle for attention between green-winged teal and blue-winged teal, with blues mostly coming out on top in recent years.
But an incident back in the spring brought a third teal into the picture. A male cinnamon teal was spotted with a group of blue-winged teal in Will County.
