Minnesota DNR wants public input on proposals for state’s fisheries

The Minnesota DNR has opened up two fisheries rulemaking packages for public comment – one for inland waters and another for Minnesota-Wisconsin border waters.
For inland waters, the proposed rules – of which there are several – are intended to clarify fishing season dates, modify some fishing seasons, establish and/or modify daily and possession limits for some species, and clarify the northern pike management zone boundaries.

Aerated bait buckets not exempt from Minnesota’s aquatic invasive species regulations

When Bill Rollie and Spencer McGrew, watercraft inspectors in Otter Tail County, Minn., interact with anglers and inspect their boats, it’s obvious what they’re looking for: zebra mussels or visible vegetation attached to boats and trailers.
What is a more inconspicuous item they’re looking for when anglers exit a water body is the microscopic aquatic invasive species that could be hiding in plain sight inside bait buckets, aerated or otherwise.

Judge rules against deer farmers in ’23 lawsuit from Minnesota

As Minnesota’s remaining deer farmers stare at an impending Sept. 1 deadline to adhere to new fencing requirements, a federal judge last week dealt the farmers another blow in dismissing a lawsuit aimed at 2023 and 2024 legislative actions regarding those farms, and in also denying a temporary injunction request targeting the new fencing rules.
John Tunheim, a U.S. district court judge, issued the ruling Aug. 14. An attorney for the Minnesota Deer Farmers Association immediately stated the group would appeal the ruling.

Minnesota Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: During summer, keep your catch fresh

After water temps dipped into the 70s following a 7- to 10-day cooldown, it now appears water temps will remain high for the next week or so. During the hot days ahead, adding a block of ice or a frozen gallon water jug to your livewell can keep the water cool when you pull warm surface water into livewell.

Canada lynx confirmed in Vermont for first time since 2018

A rare native wild cat — the Canada lynx — has been confirmed in Vermont for the first time since 2018 from video recorded on Aug. 17 in Rutland County, according to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.
“Canada lynx are endangered in Vermont and threatened nationally,” said Brehan Furfey, wildlife biologist and furbearer project leader with the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.  “That makes any verifiable lynx sighting in our state important.”

Patrick Durkin: Smallies get more doubt than love on anglers’ menus

During summer fishing trips to Canada in the 1990s, my wife never assumed we would catch enough fish before noon to feed our three daughters shore-lunch on the nearest island. So, we never left the cabin without hotdogs in the cooler.
“Just in case,” Penny said.
Realize, too, that we aren’t snobby about which fish we eat. Although our girls fought over walleye cheeks, we never held out for “walters.” For shore lunch, we regularly pan-fried northern pike and smallmouth bass on the old two-burner Coleman stove.

Commentary: The Public Service Commission can save the greater prairie chicken in Wisconsin

The three Public Service Commission (PSC) of Wisconsin commissioners should answer the question: Do we have to extirpate the last remaining greater prairie chicken in Wisconsin so that Vista Sands Solar (VSS – the applicant) can build its solar array farm as it is presented to the PSC? The answer is yes if the commission accepts the VSS application for a 6,737-acre 2,700,000 solar array panel project as presented.
