Commentary: Solar farm over prairie chickens in Wisconsin?

In one of the most contested cases in the history of the Wisconsin Public Service Commission (WPSC), will the commissioners stand up and save the last remaining greater prairie chickens?
Or will the WPSC make the conscious decision to extirpate this iconic threatened native species? Based on the draft WPSC staff recommendations published Oct. 28, future generations of Wisconsinites will no longer enjoy this natural resource.

Commentary: The Public Service Commission can save the greater prairie chicken in Wisconsin

The three Public Service Commission (PSC) of Wisconsin commissioners should answer the question: Do we have to extirpate the last remaining greater prairie chicken in Wisconsin so that Vista Sands Solar (VSS – the applicant) can build its solar array farm as it is presented to the PSC? The answer is yes if the commission accepts the VSS application for a 6,737-acre 2,700,000 solar array panel project as presented.

Commentary: Death of Wisconsin prairie chicken at hand?

The greater prairie chicken (GPC) is a native species to Wisconsin. There are fewer than 500 prairie chickens remaining in Wisconsin, with two-thirds of them concentrated on the a 12,700-acre Buena Vista Marsh in southwestern Portage County. There is a 6,737-acre solar project (Vista Sands Solar) before the Public Service Commission (PSC) that would be located in and adjacent to the Buena Vista Marsh.
This project is in addition to a 2,167-acre solar project approved by the PSC in April 2023. This combined project will be four times larger than any other solar project in Wisconsin and will be the largest solar project in the U.S. (per Certrec), if approved.
Our 94 years of scientific research on this species tell us we will lose the GPC in Wisconsin if this project is approved as submitted.
