Steve Weisman: Iowa rebuilds after terrible flooding with need to learn from the situation

As a former high school language arts instructor, one of the units I taught in 9th grade English was Greek mythology.
One of the legends surrounded the Phoenix, a mythical bird that would live for several hundred years before it would die by setting itself on fire. However, from those ashes, a new life would then start. Symbolically, it stands for immortality and renewal, and it is often associated with tragedies in our lives. With our strongest efforts, we can take dire situations and out of those ashes, growth can come. Hopefully, humanity will be better and stronger.

Steve Pollick: Red Ryder plinking a good tune-up for hunting season

It all started out as a tongue-in-cheek Christmas gift to my brother, Dave, several holidays ago.
It was a “genuine Red Ryder 200-shot carbine-action air rifle with a compass in the stock.” Just like the fictional nine-year-old Ralphie dreamed about in the now-iconic holiday classic, “A Christmas Story.” Then it became some genuine adult shooting fun.

Pheasant crowing counts up in North Dakota, conditions not as beneficial for ducks this spring

The lack of snow this winter and late arrival of spring rain was not as helpful for ducks in North Dakota but provided some better conditions for pheasants. Let’s take a closer look.
The number of rooster’s heard crowing during the North Dakota Game and Fish Department’s 2024 spring pheasant crowing count survey was up 37% statewide from last year.
“This is really good news but expected, considering we had such great production last year and the mild winter we had certainly wasn’t hard on birds,” said RJ Gross, Department upland game management biologist.

Shallow Albert Lea Lake in Minnesota’s Freeborn County will challenge anglers

There’s a flowage in southern Minnesota that includes two lakes in downtown Albert Lea in Freeborn County: Fountain Lake and a larger body of water to its southeast – the town’s namesake, Albert Lea Lake.
At more than 2,600 acres, Albert Lea Lake is a good-sized fishery for this area. It’s also a shallow lake, with a maximum depth of less than 6 feet. That lack of depth could be considered both good and bad.

For multi-day backcountry trips, the Elite 3800 pack bag is the optimal choice. With its 3800 cubic inch capacity, the main compartment features zippers along both sides of the pack so that the compartment can be fully exposed to access items anywhere in the bag without having to “fish around” and pull-out gear (unlike the typical top-load bags).
