Minnesota DNR plans for a walleye limit of two on Mille Lacs beginning Aug. 16

With angling pressure about one-third of Minnesota DNR projections and a walleye take that’s just over 26% of the total allowable state angler kill, DNR officials told members of the Mille Lacs Lake Fisheries Advisory Committee on Monday that they’re proposing – beginning Aug. 16 – a two-fish walleye limit with a harvest slot of 18 to 20 inches (with one over 28 inches allowed in possession).
The department originally had planned to allow for a one-fish limit and a harvest slot of 21 to 23 inches.
“There are still signatures that need to go on documents,” said Brad Parsons, DNR Fisheries Section manager, who said that was likely to occur this week.

Minnesota’s Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: ‘Unsticking’ the line-counter reel ‘odometer’

With all the dust in the air and simple wear and tear to a line counter, the line “odometer” can get sticky and become hard to read. Sometimes the first number reads 0 or 1 and the second number does the same or is halfway in between. It’s hard to know how much line you have out.

New York judge bans LaPierre from NRA for 10 years

A New York judge on Monday banned Wayne LaPierre, the former head of the National Rifle Association, from holding a paid position with the organization for a decade, but declined to appoint an independent monitor to oversee the gun rights group.
The split decision from Judge Joel Cohen came on the final day of arguments in the second stage of a civil trial brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Officials say a big ‘flush’ of southeast Minnesota streams has been good for fish habitat

After two-plus years of drought and low water that hampered stream-trout fishing throughout southeastern Minnesota, recent heavy spring summer rains have significantly improved stream conditions across the region, according to state officials and regional fishing guides.
Sediment and in-stream vegetation – long, green mats or clusters in some instances that rendered some streams unfishable – have been “flushed” from many watersheds, clearing out pools and exposing rocky runs important to fish spawning.

Minnesotans head West to battle massive wildfires

To help 12 western states battle wildfires, Minnesota state agencies have deployed more than 100 firefighters as of July 24 to assist in the region’s fire-combat efforts.
The needs in Oregon, Colorado, California, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico, Nebraska, Utah, and Nevada have grown as the fire season turned up the heat this summer.
“They’re drawing from a larger pool of national resources, and we’re seeing a greater shift that tends to draw in a little bit more help from Minnesota. And we’re able to support that because our fire needs, currently, are at a lower level,” said Leanne Langeberg, Interagency Fire Center public information officer.
