New archery range opens in Upper Peninsula’s Sands Township

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of longtime members of a Marquette archery club and generosity of a number of area businesses, a 14-target archery range is now up and running near the Marquette County Fairgrounds in Sands Township.
The new archery range replaces one that Deertrack Bowhunters operated and maintained in the city limits near the former Deertrack Village since the 1940s. When the property where the former archery range was located was sold in 2016, the organization was left without a range. Life member and acting president Mark Hirvonen spent years trying to locate a place to establish a new archery range.

Ben Moyer: Low flows in Pennsylvania creeks show value of aquatic organism passage

There’s one upside to this summer’s extended dry weather and record heat in Pennsylvania. Shriveled creeks put a spotlight on the vital importance of aquatic organism passage within stream basins and watersheds.
As creeks withered, fish needed to move to places that still offered deeper, cooler, sheltered pools. Later, they’d need to redistribute, moving upstream or downstream back to familiar haunts. Some fish, in some streams, could do so. But many were likely marooned by drought and the inability to pass through a road culvert or pipe.

Lake Erie Waterkeeper organization to mark somber milestone of Toledo Water Crisis

On Aug. 4, 2014, toxic algae, properly known as cyanobacteria, caused the city of Toledo to warn more than 400,000 of its water customers not to drink nor touch their treated water.
On the 10th anniversary of what has been termed “The Toledo Water Crisis,” the Lake Erie Waterkeeper organization is hosting an observance of this somber milestone. Elected officials, researchers, agency officials, members of the local press, Lake Erie Waterkeeper members, and other invited guests will board the Jet Express IV ferry at the Toledo Yacht Club for a trip out to the Toledo Water Intake, the source of the city’s raw water.

Bob Gwizdz: Beating the brush is part of the experience when going after Michigan’s brook trout

There are guys who are bass fishermen and guys who are walleye fishermen and guys who are muskie fishermen, and though most of them will fish for other species given the circumstances, most will tell you they’re pretty true to their first loves.
Then there are guys like Chuck Emmert, who is a brook trout fisherman. And not just a brook trout fisherman, but a small stream brook trout fisherman. That’s an entirely different breed.
