Lake Superior’s cisco boom is creating many big fish

It’s a good time to be a Lake Superior angler.
Last year, Minnesota DNR fisheries biologists found huge numbers of 1-year-old ciscoes, or lake herring, in their survey nets. It turned out to be a historic year-class from 2022 for a forage fish that serves as the base for Lake Superior’s fishy food chain. Lake trout, Chinook and coho salmon, steelhead, and even walleyes have taken advantage of the herring boom, state officials, charter boat captains, and others say, and are growing bigger and fatter.

Iowa DNR seeks comment on proposed Shooting Sports Grant Program administrative rule revisions

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking informal comments on administrative rules for the Shooting Sports Grant Program.
Executive Order 10 (EO10), signed by the Governor on Jan. 10, 2023, requires all state agencies to identify which administrative rule chapters will be retained or rescinded. The EO10 process includes public engagement with the opportunity for meaningful input.

The right light settings, and other factors to help get in and out of the deer woods undetected

Anyone who has hunted whitetails long enough knows the feeling. You’re almost to your treestand after moving slowly through the woods in the dark when the sound of an alarming blow and scattering hooves running through the leaves break the silence.
Many hunters wrestle with the best ways to get in and out of a hunt location without being seen or smelled by deer, and for good reason. You may get away with more during the rut when bucks throw caution to the wind and travel longer distances, but entrance and exit strategies are critical to consistently filling tags.

Specially trained spaniels key to locating elusive ornate box turtles for research in Illinois

Ruger, Yogi, and Skeeter are unfazed by the on-again, off-again rain this chilly morning. The three Boykin spaniels have a job to do – and it’s obvious from their wagging tails and enthusiastic trotting that they love their occupation.
“Find turtle! Find turtle!” shouts the dogs’ owner and trainer, John Rucker. And the three chocolate-colored dogs are off again, scampering through the prairie at Illinois’ TNC’s Nachusa Grasslands Preserve in Lee County, pausing every few feet to sniff a fallen branch or the roots of native grasses.

Electric wheelchairs ‘rolling’ into Camp Santanoni in Newcomb, N.Y.

Newcomb, N.Y. — Hikers making the nearly 5-mile trip into Camp Santanoni, in Newcomb, better keep their eyes open. Coming down the trail, which is actually a road, could potentially be one, or perhaps two electronic wheelchairs – or mobility devices – allowing those with disabilities to visit the historic landmark as well.

Trapping update: global fur auctions a major price factor

Summer may seem like “down time” for Illinois trappers and fur hunters, but much is happening in the global fur market that will affect fur prices received by those here in the middle of the United States.
With the trapping season still roughly three months away, it’s interesting to look at what is happening at various international fur auctions – and it’s a good time to update local trappers on the status of the auctions.
