The Nature Conservancy plants 2.3 million trees in Minnesota in 2024

To increase the diversity and resilience of the northwoods, The Nature Conservancy planted 2.3 million trees across partner lands in northern Minnesota in 2024 – a record number for TNC. As a result, TNC has now planted more than 10 million trees in the state during the past two decades.
Every spring, TNC partners with the Minnesota DNR, the U.S. Forest Service, and local governments to plant tree seedlings. This year’s tree-planting efforts in Minnesota shattered TNC’s previous record of 1.4 million trees planted in 2023.

Specially trained spaniels key to locating elusive ornate box turtles for research in Illinois

Ruger, Yogi, and Skeeter are unfazed by the on-again, off-again rain this chilly morning. The three Boykin spaniels have a job to do – and it’s obvious from their wagging tails and enthusiastic trotting that they love their occupation.
“Find turtle! Find turtle!” shouts the dogs’ owner and trainer, John Rucker. And the three chocolate-colored dogs are off again, scampering through the prairie at Illinois’ TNC’s Nachusa Grasslands Preserve in Lee County, pausing every few feet to sniff a fallen branch or the roots of native grasses.
