Beyond Minnesota: Rare white buffalo calf reported in Yellowstone

The reported birth of a rare white buffalo in Yellowstone National Park fulfills a Lakota prophecy that portends better times, according to members of the American Indian tribe.
The birth of the calf comes after a severe winter in 2023 drove thousands of Yellowstone buffalo to lower elevations. More than 1,500 were killed, sent to slaughter, or transferred to tribes seeking to reclaim stewardship over an animal their ancestors lived alongside for millennia.

Steve Carney: Angling transition period in Minnesota, and new CDC regs affect dog owners

The new rules are aiming to prevent dogs with rabies from coming into the United States, but this ridiculous set of regulations has steps and “hoops” to jump through that you won’t believe. If you are unaware of these requirements, Fido gets left behind the border.

Supreme Court strikes down ban on bump stocks

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday, June 14 struck down a Trump-era ban on bump stocks, the rapid-fire gun accessories used in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, in a ruling that threw firearms back into the nation’s political spotlight.
The high court’s conservative majority found that the Trump administration overstepped when it changed course from predecessors and banned bump stocks, which allow a rate of fire comparable to machine guns. The decision came after a gunman in Las Vegas attacked a country music festival with semi-automatic rifles equipped with the accessories.

Record or not, giant pike caught in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters creates incredible memory

Jacob Skorloken, 39, of Merrifield, Minn., recalls going to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness with his father 21 years ago and catching his first fish in an area his family calls the “honey hole.”
Fast-forward to May 2024, when Skorloken, his father, and some friends visited the same honey hole during their 21st annual trip to the BWCAW. This time, Skorloken caught the biggest fish of his life.
And it might have been a state record for the longest catch-and-release northern pike. The only issue: Skorloken didn’t take complete measurements to confirm the length.

Odd spring bodes well for early-summer anglers in Minnesota this year

As Minnesota anglers transition into the summer fishing season, there still seems to be a hint of spring in the air – and water – with what’s going on as far as fish-producing angling patterns across the state.
Despite record early ice-out dates and an extremely warm March, much of April and May remained relatively cool. Now, into the third week of June and a little more than one month into the game-fish season, fish activity has been all over the place. It’s been quite a spring.
