LSOHC approves federal LWCF encumbrance for Keystone WMA

Members of the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council met Wednesday, June 12, to kick off the new year of funding proposals. They also approved a request from the Minnesota DNR to place a federal Land and Water Conservation Fund encumbrance on a 450-acre parcel within the Keystone WMA.
There was debate among members about whether Keystone WMA was the best choice for the encumbrance, but a majority favored it via an 8-3 vote. Keystone WMA, a new property purchased through various Outdoor Heritage Fund proposals, includes 1,833 acres in the northeast Twin Cities metro near Hugo and Stillwater.

Mike Raykovicz: Big baits mean big bass

New York’s bass season opened on June 15, and professional anglers with fast boats and all the latest gear, as well as weekend fishermen, will be targeting the species whose season runs until the end of November.
As a kid in high school, the Susquehanna River was our bass destination of choice. Our preferred bait was stone cats or what we called “catties.” These small catfish lived under the river rocks and every fishing outing entailed first catching enough catties for an afternoon of smallmouth fishing.

Bighorn sheep population trending upward in North Dakota

The fish and wildlife variety in North Dakota is impressive.
From paddlefish and pallid sturgeon in the Missouri River, to trophy catfish and the recent repopulation of sturgeon in the Red River. North Dakota is home to mountain lions, moose and elk, and also unique furbearers including river otters, fishers, bobcats and American martens.
While few outside of the state would recognize the variety, North Dakotans take pride in sharing the water and land with these unique residents. One of the more notable is the bighorn sheep.
