Pittsburgh officials expand deer hunting program in parks

City officials plan to expand controlled bowhunting to three additional parks this fall in an effort to manage Pittsburgh’s spiraling population of white-tailed deer.
They also are considering augmenting the hunting program with professional sharpshooters.
In a pilot launched last September with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 30 archers harvested 108 deer in Frick and Riverview parks through January, according to a debrief report from Mayor Ed Gainey’s office. Archers are being recruited to also hunt Schenley, Highland, and Emerald View parks in the same time frame in 2024-25.
