Aviation, nature combine forces over northeast Ohio’s Wingfoot Lake

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) recently announced that Wingfoot Lake State Park will be part of the Ohio Air and Space Trail, a significant initiative by America 250-Ohio to honor Ohio’s rich history in air and space exploration. As the manufacturing location of Goodyear’s first blimps, Wingfoot Lake State Park is a notable addition to the Ohio Air and Space Trail commemorating Ohio’s instrumental role in aerospace developments.

Ohio Insider: Conducting an autopsy of the state’s 2024 spring turkey season

Now that the 2024 spring turkey season is in the books, I conducted my annual autopsy of the season with Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife game biologist Mark Wiley.
For the record, Ohio’s hunters in the South and Northeast zones bagged 15,535 birds, which nearly matches the 15,673 spring gobblers harvested in 2023. This spring’s turkey harvest also nearly matched what Wiley and his colleagues thought would happen before the season began.

Memorial Lake is a great place to catch pike in Pennsylvania’s Lebanon County

The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission’s list of “best” places in the state to fish for northern pike does not include Memorial Lake.

Far more waters around Pennsylvania hold at least enough pike to make things interesting, though. Memorial Lake, the 84-acre water at the center of Memorial Lake State Park in Lebanon County, is one of them.

Star Watch: Finding Sagittarius, an archer or teapot?

If you have a good imagination and are willing to stay up late some nights during July or August until the skies get good and dark, you may find a “teapot” above the southeastern horizon. This familiar-shaped object is part of a group of stars that make up the constellation Sagittarius.
Sagittarius means “archer” in Latin. This is what the ancient astronomers saw when they viewed this group of 20 or so stars.
