Illinois bill banning coyote hunt contests described as ‘tale of two regions’

An Illinois measure that would prohibit contests that award cash or prizes for killing certain wildlife is unlikely to clear the Senate after narrowly passing the House. House Bill 2900 passed the House on a 62-45 vote.
Much of the debate in both the House and Senate centers on contests that award the killing of coyotes as a method of population control.

Ralph Loos: Another angler casts himself into the river of scandal, this time in Illinois bass tournament

Almost exactly a year after jail time was ordered for two fishermen caught stuffing weights into Ohio walleyes, cheating jumped in the water and quickly swam right over to a competitive fishing event here in Illinois.
Details were a bit fuzzy for the first few days, but the organization that hosted the tournament quickly made things clear. What Cal Sag Bass Anglers did was admirable. It got straight to the point with a message on its Facebook page May 15.

Illinois DNR taps double cicada emergence to inspire state’s artists

DNR is hosting a cicada-themed art show during the Illinois State Fair. An audio track to support the show shouldn’t be hard to capture.
“Screams” from cicadas should be evident soon, as Illinois is the epicenter of a rare double cicada brood emergence this summer. DNR wants to commemorate the occasion with a public art show in Conservation World during the 2024 Illinois State Fair, which takes place Aug. 8-18.

New brown trout strain stocked by Illinois DNR could benefit Lake Michigan anglers

Illinois DNR is stocking a new strain of brown trout into Lake Michigan this year, hoping to see better survival rates among young fish.
For more than two decades, eggs from the Plymouth Rock strain were reared at the Jake Wolf fish Hatchery in Illinois and stocked as 5- to 6-inch fingerlings in July. This year, Crawford strain brown trout eggs were obtained from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s federal hatchery system and reared at Jake Wolf.
