Last-minute salmon nets $15K top prize in New York tournament series opener

It was only fitting that the Spring Lake Ontario Counties Trout, Salmon, and Walleye Derby came down to the wire on the final day of the popular contest. George Prentice of Smicksburg, Pa., caught a 25-pound salmon at 11:30 a.m. on May 12 and needed to rush his prize catch to the Boat Doctors in Olcott, N.Y., to beat the 1 p.m. deadline in order to cash in on the $15,000 grand prize.

Dean Bortz: Turkeys get the best of me, but 2024 season was no disappointment

I guess if my only point or objective to turkey hunting was bagging a beard-swinging bird bellering in my face, then I’d have given up the sport a long time ago and gone back to catching walleyes and crappies in the spring. This spring I had four turkey tags in my pocket (or is it cloud these days?).
Only one of those tags could be considered used by the end of the fifth period, but I still had one of my best turkey seasons ever. How could that be? Well, I have some good friends and family to thank for a great 2024 turkey hunting season.
