Illinois had 12 boating deaths in 2023

The number of boating fatalities on Illinois waters doubled between 2022 and 2023, according to statistics released by DNR’s Office of Law Enforcement.
In 2023, there were 70 reportable boating accidents on Illinois waters, resulting in 12 fatalities and 37 injuries. There were only 6 fatalities reported in 2022. Of the 12 fatalities last year, eight who died were not wearing life jackets or vests.
