North Dakota angler snags record-tying paddlefish

Tyler Hughes, of Mandan, N.D., snagged a record-tying 131-pound paddlefish on May 3 in the Yellowstone River southwest of Williston.
The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has confirmed that Hughes’ 74-inch paddlefish ties the record from 2016 by Grant Werkmeister, of Williston. The two fish are the heaviest caught and documented in North Dakota.

New bear-related rules in effect for Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

Campers in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness should be aware that a new rule aimed at preventing or reducing human/bear encounters went into effect this spring.
All campers are now required to hang their food (and any food containers and scented items such as toothpaste or deodorant) at least 12 feet from the ground and 6 feet from any tree trunks or branches, or store it in a bear-proof container approved by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee.

Extensive Minnesota crappie study delves into the ‘cycles’ of this boom or bust species

A new multi-year statewide fisheries research project regarding crappies might eventually shed light on the population dynamics of one of the Minnesota’s most popular, but understudied, game fish.
The study is being led by the Minnesota DNR’s fisheries research unit and will use fisheries staffers from across the state to collect crappies throughout Minnesota’s diverse lake regions. The goal is to collect as much “high-quality age information with consistent sampling techniques” during the spring, said Chris Smith, a DNR fisheries research biologist in Glenwood who’s leading the study.

Minnesota’s Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Prepare for a successful walleye outing

A major change I made when preparing for a walleye-fishing outing is how I prepare my snells for rigging.
Gone are the days of tangled messes of line. I’ve worked with every device for tackle box storage solutions – pool noodles probably being my favorite.

Sightings, catches part of Rice Lake mystic in Illinois’ Fulton County

A pair of fishermen wandering about in the wetlands just outside of Banner were among witnesses to a rare site almost four years ago.
In April 2020, just as the COVID pandemic was taking hold and lockdowns were beginning, two whooping cranes were spotted by a handful of people that day. The tall birds – ”whoopers” are the tallest of all cranes – were seen in an area of the Illinois River floodplain between Banner Marsh and Rice Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area.
