Yellow Lake walleyes elusive during governor’s opener in Wisconsin

The 2024 Wisconsin Governor’s Fishing Opener was celebrated May 3 in Siren and May 4 at Yellow Lake in Burnett County, putting the spotlight on Burnett County’s many natural resources. However, one of the state’s most popular game fish, the walleye, failed to make the big stage.
An opening morning steady rainfall kept some fishermen inside, while those who braved the elements found few willing walleyes. According to local DNR Fish Biologist Craig Roberts, the 2,283-acre Yellow Lake is the best walleye lake in Burnett County, and also offers a good muskie fishery.

Wisconsin State Roundup: A look at turkey harvest, and ways to contact your senators about wolf delisting bill

A quick look at the turkey kill so far shows that as of May 7, hunters had registered 32,417 birds. Zone 1 registrations topped the list with 9,111 birds, with Zone 3 hunters next at 8,350.
Hunters registered 43,439 turkeys during the 2023 spring season, a 9% increase from 2022 and 6% above the 10-year average. I’m hoping to add to that total with two Zone 1 tags for the fourth season and one Zone 4 tag for the fifth season.

Wakeboats dominate Wisconsin spring hearings; a look at how voters responded to key questions

Wakeboats struck another tsunami of opposition during April’s Wisconsin conservation hearings, with more than 70% of voters favoring restrictions on the fun, but controversial, wave-generating boats.
Voters also supported a proposed ban on 360-degree forward-facing imaging cameras for fishing, but rejected a proposed ban on all lead-based ammunition by 2030. The hearings attracted 18,802 participants, who weighed in on 49 proposals. It was the first time since 2019 that citizens could attend the hearings and vote there. Roughly 1,000 people voted in person April 8, but most voted online April 10-13.

Ask a fisheries biologist: Wisconsin’s native, non-native species

This week, DNR Fish Biologist Max Wolter discusses our native species, and those that are not native.
For Wisconsin anglers, brook trout, lake trout, smallmouth bass, and bluegills are some of our most popular native fish species. They have beloved roles in Wisconsin’s fishing culture and anglers get excited to chase them in local waters. However, there are parts of the world where these species are not supposed to be, and they have a very different reputation.

Unlawful black bear kill in New York leads to charge

Every spring, the state Department of Environmental Conservation cautions residents about the increased chances of encountering black bears as they emerge from their winter dens looking for food.
John Foley, of Cazenovia, N.Y., (Madison County), apparently didn’t get the memo. Foley was charged recently with illegally killing a nuisance bear on his property, and DEC officials say it’s a good example of what to do and what not to do when dealing with hungry spring bruins.
