Wisconsin’s Vilas, Oneida county offer doe tags; Iron, Ashland buck only

Members of two Citizen Deer Advisory Councils in neighboring counties went in different directions on antlerless deer quota suggestions from the deer hunters who provided input to the councils.
Vilas County CDAC members ignored overwhelming requests from deer hunters to reduce the counties antlerless quota and tag numbers and raised both numbers for the 2024 seasons. A week later, Oneida County CDAC members heeded the public input and lowered their 2024 recommendations from last year’s levels.

Wisconsin’s Washburn, Sawyer County Deer Advisory Councils lower antlerless quotas

In a move similar to surrounding counties, County Deer Advisory Council members in Wisconsin’s Washburn and Sawyer counties recommended a reduction in the number of antlerless deer permits for the 2024 fall hunts.
Last year’s Washburn County antlerless authorizations were 3,100 on public land and 6,000 on private land. This year the recommendation is for 1,000 permits on public land and 5,000 on private land, which reflects what CDAC members heard from the public.

Four indicted over alleged poaching of giant buck from Clinton County, Ohio

A 28-year-old Wilmington, Ohio, man was indicted by a grand jury May 10 for his alleged role in the poaching of an 18-point buck last November.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, on behalf of the Ohio DNR, announced the indictment of Christopher J. Alexander and others allegedly involved in the case.
“Blinded by greed, the defendants set their sights on fame and fortune while disregarding basic hunting regulations,” Yost said in a statement released by his office.
The indictment, returned by a Clinton County grand jury, accuses Alexander of unlawfully harvesting the deer on Nov. 9, 2023.

Capture of Illinois muskie first tagged in 2006 leads to questions on age, growth rates for the species

Debates over what age puts a fisherman – or a fish scientist –  over the proverbial hill will never be solidly settled.
But knowing when to call a muskie “old” is elementary. Or is it? The specific questions, “What makes a muskie old?” and “How long can the toothy predator live in Illinois waters?” became topics of discussion recently when DNR netted one with a significant history.

Minnesota DNR uses explosives to remove deer stands at Bowstring State Forest

Jim Fena was sitting in a chair watching television one day this past winter when a loud sound enveloped his home and knocked his half-filled Coke can off the counter. Fena thought a jet plane had roared over his home at low altitude.
That was midday on Feb. 6. The next day, he was in nearby Deer River chatting with fellow citizens about an explosion at Bowstring State Forest. Fena learned the noise had come when the Minnesota DNR used explosives to demolish two deer stands within the state forest. Fena literally felt the explosion a half-mile away from the site, but others in Deer River said they felt it three or four miles away.
