Wisconsin Natural Resources Board approves purchase of 93 acres for 967K

The Natural Resources Board (NRB) approved the acquisition of 55 acres in southern Wisconsin and 37.7 acres in the north, all of which will be open for public use.
At its April 10 meeting, the board approved acquiring 55 acres within the Kettle Moraine State Forest–Southern Unit in Waukesha County for the Ice Age Trail. The cost of $645,000 to be paid to the William C. Grotjan Family of Stevens Point will be paid from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program. The land will be open for nature-based recreation.

Walleye, northern pike, pickerel, tiger muskie season opens May 1 in New York

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar today announced the fishing season for walleye, Northern pike, pickerel, and tiger muskellunge begins on May 1.
“New York is home to exceptional coolwater fishing opportunities, with many lakes and rivers renowned for abundant walleye and aggressive pike and pickerel,” said Interim Commissioner Mahar. “We hope that all anglers find the time to enjoy these fishing opportunities in 2024 and encourage those with more experience to share their enjoyment by introducing someone new to the sport.”

Ohio Reader Stories: Maumee River has taught me a lot about life

I spent a recent trip to the Maumee River and I was up there fishing alone. I can’t recall the last time that’s happened but it caused reflection to take place.
It’s crazy to think that I’ve been going up to the Maumee for 26 years. When I first started going up there, I wasn’t allowed to fish. It was too dangerous, I’d sit on the bank until my dad got his limit and I’d get the pleasure of walking the fish all the way back to our campsite.

Water levels recovering on Wisconsin River flowages

Following a winter of record-low snow amounts in the Northwoods, spring runoff was reduced and water levels on many lakes, reservoirs, and rivers are below full less than two weeks from the opening weekend of the general fishing season in Wisconsin.
With the fishing opener slated for Saturday, May 4, there’s concern that water levels may be lower than normal for launching boats at landings and safely navigating lakes with natural obstacles, including sand bars, rocks, and stumps.

Ben Moyer: Outdoors make Ohiopyle, Pa., Northeast’s ‘Best Small Town’

As a rule, this column looks for topics of appeal to readers across Pennsylvania. But the hope is that readers will excuse this deviation to brag about something more locally (to me) focused. Readers of USA Today recently voted Ohiopyle, Pa., as the “Best Small Town in the Northeast.”
Ohiopyle is the smallest small town among places that made USA Today’s Top 10. With 13 permanent year-round residents, the tiny Fayette County borough is less populous than the police forces of other candidates like Montpelier, Vt., and Morristown, N.J.

Wisconsin’s Washington County Deer Advisory Committee meeting fails to draw quorum

For the first time since County Deer Advisory Committees (CDACs) were established, Washington County failed to have a quorum with just two members present, so no vote was taken for 2024 deer season recommendations for the county.
Instead, the recommendations from last year were carried over for this year. Washington and Ozaukee counties held a joint CDAC meeting April 22 at the Mequon Nature Preserve to set antlerless quotas and deer season framework for the 2024 season.

Steve Pollick: Tending to Froggy Bottom Creek a labor of love

Maybe the spirit of George Palmiter is smiling down on me this spring from the Great Stream in the sky. I could use the help.
Palmiter, who died a dozen years ago, was nationally known as the “River Rat” and celebrated for his low-tech, minimalist “green” method of keeping streams free-flowing without the need for bulldozers, backhoes, and other destructive machinery that too often has turned creeks and rivers into channelized, barren ditches devoid of habitat.
