First positive case of chronic wasting disease found in Indiana wild deer

The Indiana DNR has confirmed the state’s first positive case of chronic wasting disease in LaGrange County.
This positive case is adjacent to a region where CWD had previously been detected in Michigan. CWD has been detected in wild deer in 33 states, including all states bordering Indiana.

Wisconsin’s Central Elk Zone to see hunt this fall for the first time

A few lucky hunters will have the chance to hunt elk in the Central Elk Management Zone in 2024 for the first time this fall.
The Natural Resources Board (NRB) heard an update at its April 10 meeting from Christina Kizewski, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife biologist in Jackson County, that the DNR expects the central herd to number more than 180 animals this summer.
“An elk hunt in the Central Elk Management Zone is a true testament to the partnership and hard work that was incurred over the years of the reintroduction effort,” Kizewski said.

Wisconsin Waterfowl Association hires pair of wetland ecologists in effort to boost wetlands

A Wisconsin conservation group hopes that a pair of recently hired wetland restoration ecologists will make a positive difference for Wisconsin’s waterfowl hunters.
Anna Rzchowski and Mark Pfost joined the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association (WWA) last year as part of an effort to boost wetland areas throughout the state that need significant restoration work. The WWA, based in Wales, is dedicated to preserving Wisconsin’s waterfowl and wetland resources.

Joe Weiss, longtime Wisconsin Conservation Congress delegate, voted out in Washburn County

Washburn County’s Conservation Congress Chairman, Joe Weiss, has been part of the April spring hearings and delegate elections for decades. This year’s meeting will undoubtedly be the one he’ll remembers most. After being a Washburn County delegate for 30-years, Weiss was voted out of his seat.
Weiss also serves as the congress vice-chair.

Wisconsin fishing guides taking clients to Michigan lakes must now get $300 license

Wisconsin fishing guides who want to take clients to Michigan lakes must now pay a $300 fee every three years and will have to follow other requirements in order to maintain the special license.
Sport fishing guides operating in Michigan now need an inland guide license to take clients on inland lakes, rivers or streams. The license went into effect March 1. The license is required for anyone guiding on any water except the Great Lakes, Great Lakes connecting waters and bodies of water with a surface area of less than 5 acres.

Ask a fisheries biologist: What are “triploid” fish?

Stocking a new fish species into a lake can change it forever, particularly if the stocked fish begin reproducing. In those scenarios, it might never be possible to get rid of that new species. We have seen that issue in some lakes with the (presumed) illegal stocking of northern pike.
Fisheries scientists, however, have figured out a way to stock a ‘triploid’ fish that will only be in the waterbody temporarily.

Minnesota 12-year-old fishes with a purpose for cancer awareness

When Khloe Thorson landed fish No. 80, her mother asked her a simple, direct question.
“I asked her if she wanted to stop,” said Meranda Gonska. “But her answer was an emphatic no. She just wouldn’t quit.”
This wasn’t, after all, your average day of ice fishing in late February. It was an ice-fishing fundraiser. And it didn’t matter that it was cold and windy and that Khloe – her face red with windburn – had been fishing outside for nine hours already, with only one bathroom break in between. For Khloe, a 12-year-old seventh-grader at Pequot Lakes Middle School, finishing what she started was and is deeply personal.

Jeff Frischkorn: Coveting thoughts lead to angling excellence

“Thou shalt not covet …” (The 10th Commandment)
It was an expressed point of view I had long coveted to hear from Grace, our oldest grandchild fisherperson. “Whew, my arms are tired,” said Grace Rathe, 22. “They hurt.”

Grace had just landed a trophy Lake Ontario lake trout, the fish having swam up the Lower Niagara River to where it spirals into a narrow cauldron of angry water aptly named “Devil’s Hole.”
