Senators want Pennsylvania Game Commission to pay more to local communities

Legislation that was passed late last year increased the amount of payment in lieu of taxes made to local municipalities where game lands are located, but the hike didn’t come from the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
The next round of legislation, however, may take a different approach.

Pennsylvania Mixed Bag: Drought watch lifted for last eight counties

CBF is seeking photos that illustrate the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay and its local tributaries, as well as the plants, animals, and people that rely on it. Photos must include a river, stream, creek, or other body of water within Pennsylvania’s portion of the bay watershed or other parts of the bay region itself.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Crossbow education needed for hunting image

Crossbows have been a part of my big game hunting life for 35 years. It began in southeastern Ohio as part of a media weekend run by Horton Crossbows at a place they called Camp Opportunity.
I still remember the first time a shot a crossbow, sitting next to my father at stationery targets 20 yards from us. The first time we shot one, we looked at each other and agreed that we had not been fully educated. They were both fun and effective.

What shaped the great Adirondack forest into what it is today?

Very often in the spring right after ice-out we would fish Long Pond in the backwoods south of Indian Lake. It was one of the best brook trout ponds in the area.
On many of our trips we would see large chunks of white aspen with the bark chewed off during the winter floating around in the pond. The beaver were there because of the aspen and the aspen was there because of a forest fire at the pond around 1900.

Creating another generation of turkey hunters, Part 2: The practice factor and the proper gear

Practice shooting sets the table for a successful turkey hunt with youth. But mentors need to know that there will be ups and downs.
Your kids will learn to battle through gun-shyness and recoil challenges. Don’t force them to take shots they don’t want to take. If they need a break, give them a break. If they don’t want to shoot and aren’t up to the challenge, they just may not be ready.
