Michigan furbearer regulations approved, includes three-month closure of coyote hunting on public lands

Despite strong opposition from hunters at its March 14 meeting in Lansing, the Michigan Natural Resources Commission voted 4-2 in favor of a proposed furbearer regulation change that included closing the coyote season April 15 to July 15 on public lands.
The season remains open year-round on private lands if a coyote is doing damage or physically present where it could cause damage.

Angler lands world-record paddlefish in Missouri during his first time ever snagging

The 2024 paddlefish snagging season in Missouri got off to a remarkable start when an angler harvested a new world record fish at the Lake of the Ozarks.
According to a press release from the Missouri Department of Conservation, Chad Williams of Olathe, Kansas, snagged a 164-pound, 13-ounce paddlefish on March 17. The fish shattered the previous state record in Missouri of 140 pounds, while also narrowly surpassing the previous world record of 164 pounds. Call it a bit of beginner’s luck for Williams.

Wild bobwhite quail return to Pennsylvania, but hunting is a long way off

With one experienced bird dog locked on point and another convincingly backing her, it was clear something had holed-up beneath the dense brush pile.
The hunter cautiously approached, double barrel at the ready. Suddenly, a covey of three quail sprung from the cover, caught the wind, and banked eastward as shots rang out in quick succession.

Jeremiah Haas: Fantastic spring fishing on Illinois waters of the Mississippi is almost here

April is nearly here and unofficially spring is taking place on the river. While this year has seemingly been a year of early warm weather in Illinois, Mother Nature tends to know the calendar and stays on schedule.
Each spring anglers are treated to a few weeks when the waters warm, yet flood waters have not reached the Quad Cities area. Typically flood waters tend to arrive around the second week of April.

Patrick Durkin: Trappers lend a hand when dogs wander off

Fur trappers can seem uneasy and vulnerable, even though they’re the most skilled, regulated and well-rounded outdoors-folks you’ll find in our marshes, woodlands, and muddy shallows.
They often don’t share their best stories, fearing their insights will be ignored or distorted. After all, assumptions and ignorance sometimes make others dismiss or disrespect their experiences, causing good deeds to be snubbed or demonized with each retelling.
