Illinois’ Trey McKinney makes history at Bassmaster Elite

Just a few years ago, high school anglers up and down Illinois dreaded competing against the phenom from the Marion-Carbondale area. Trey McKinney had began winning bass fishing championships at the age of 13 – and it didn’t look like he was ever going to stop.
He still hasn’t. Earlier this month, the now 19-year-old reached a career pinnacle by becoming the youngest angler to win a Bassmaster Elite event.

Bobcat harvest climbs during 2023-24 season in Illinois

Hunters topped the 200 mark for the first time and teamed with trappers to register the largest bobcat harvest since DNR opened the season in 2016.
In all, 389 bobcats were taken during the 2023-24 season, which ended Feb. 15. That was six more bobcats than the previous high, which was set last season. The breakdown this season puts the hunter harvest at 214 bobcats, up from the 198 taken in 2022-23.

Should forward-facing sonar (live scoping) be banned in Wisconsin? How about wildlife shining?
Does the state need better wake boat regulations? Should monarch butterflies be recognized as the state butterfly?
Those are some of the 37 advisory questions the Conservation Congress will offer on hunting, fishing, and trapping at the annual spring fish and game hearings set for Monday, April 8.

Mike Schoonveld: Find the warmest water for early-season fishing success

Humans and other warm-blooded creatures have internal systems to help them adjust to a wide range of temperatures.
Cold-blooded creatures, like fish, don’t have those systems but they do have “preferred” temperature ranges. When they get too hot or too cold, they move. If the water is too hot, they often just go deeper.

Cost-share programs (Part 2): The Conservation Reserve Program can boost your deer habitat

In the first installment, we talked about assessing your existing habitat, naming strengths, and identifying the weaknesses currently hindering your deer-hunting success.
We also talked about figuring out a budget and finding means to conduct the habitat management needed to take your property to the next level. This installment is going to focus on the cost-share program that is likely the best-known of all – the Conservation Reserve Program.

Tom Venesky: A new deer ‘season’ begins in March

Sometimes the best seasons aren’t those set by a board or listed in a book.
One of my favorite seasons has no official opening day, legal hunting hours don’t apply and there isn’t a bag limit. The unofficial start to this particular season, however, occurs in the middle of March – a time when most bucks have shed their antlers.
