Minnesota anglers eagerly awaiting Rainy River season with early spring feeling likely

Spring hasn’t quite sprung along the U.S.-Canadian border, but an unseasonably warm winter has anglers “giddy with anticipation,” as one official put it, for the early spring walleye and sauger season to open on the Rainy River.
That’s because the river is known for its huge walleyes during its special spring season, which attracts anglers from throughout Minnesota and across the Midwest.

Minnesota DNR mulls reduction in state walleye limit

It’s a conversation that’s seven years ongoing for the Minnesota DNR’s walleye workgroup, citizens who operate in an advisory role.
In other circles, the debate likely has gone on longer: Should the statewide walleye limit be decreased from the current six? Four seems to an acceptable reduction for some anglers. Three, surveys have shown, might be too rich for the average walleye angler’s blood.

Stocked walleyes supplement a diverse fishery in Michigan’s Millecoquins Lake

Millecoquins Lake is worth a look if you’re interested in wetting a line in the eastern Upper Peninsula. The Mackinac County Lake is home to a robust fishery that also is quite diverse. It includes solid numbers and sizes of walleyes, northern pike, largemouth bass, bluegills, yellow perch, and sunfish.

Michigan DNR updates Natural Resources Commission on antler point restriction rules

The discovery of a tuberculosis positive deer in Benzie County is not likely to affect antler point regulations (APRs) in the 13-county area of the northwest Lower Peninsula that requires bucks to have at least three antler points on one side.
According to DNR Deer Specialist Chad Stewart, the agency considers the TB-positive deer to be an outlier, and the DNR rarely reacts to a single animal found to have TB.

Michigan’s Pere Marquette River bank stabilization nears end

A nearly completed bank stabilization along the Pere Marquette River near Baldwin, Mich., will stop further erosion of a steep stream bank and prevent potential failure of a railroad embankment.
The $520,000 project is north of the Flint Rainbow Club property downstream from the M37 crossing of the river. Work also involved moving the river about 15 feet away from the train embankment bank and restoring the channel to a 50-foot width.
