Ohio Mixed Bag: Camp Perry to host warm-up matches

Camp Perry, Ohio — Those high-power rifle competitors looking for the chance to earn true competition practice before the annual National Matches kicks off this summer may sign up for the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) new series of Highpower Warm-Up Matches – held on the ranges of Camp Perry in Ohio and at the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park in Alabama.

The series offers a first-hand preview of CMP’s high-power (HP) events that will be presented on the National Matches schedule in July.

“We already had a weekend event in June at Camp Perry and wanted to add additional matches,” said Christina Roguski, competition program coordinator. “We also wanted to bring back a version of the HP Regional Event that used to be held in Talladega. We thought having similar events at the two locations would be great for our competitors and our staff to prepare for Nationals.”

The High-power Warm-Up Matches will fire at Camp Perry, June 20-23, while Talladega’s Warm Up event will take place June 27-30. All Warm-Up matches will be held on CMP’s outdoor line of electronic targets.

Camp Perry will also include special Ohio Rifle & Pistol Association awards for the ORPA State Championship Match (800 Aggregate) and the Ohio Governor’s Match (the EIC Service Rifle Match).

New Officer Assigned To Cuyahoga County

Akron, Ohio — Ohio wildlife officer Mike Greer, of Bainbridge Township, has been assigned to Cuyahoga County, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. A 2023 graduate of the Wildlife Officer Academy, officer Greer previously served at-large in northeast Ohio. He replaces officer Zach Hillman, who was recently assigned to Summit County.

Greer graduated from Denair High School in California and then California State University, Stanislaus, in 2008 with a degree in communications. For more than three years, Greer served as a police officer for the Turlock (California) Police Department before joining the Seven Hills (Ohio) Police Department, where he served for more than nine years. During his down time, Greer enjoys hunting, trapping, gardening, and spending time with family.

As a wildlife officer, Greer has statewide authority to enforce wildlife regulations and protect state lands, waterways, and property.

Registration Open For Diversity Conference

Columbus — Registration is now open for the ODNR Division of Wildlife’s annual Wildlife Diversity Conference, this year marking the 40th annual event.

This year’s event, believed to be the largest single-day wildlife diversity conference in the country, is slated for March 14.

The theme of this year’s event is “Building Toward a Better Future” and features a keynote address by Dr. Mike Kreger and Doug Warmolts from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, highlighting 35 years of conservation partnerships that have helped to save Ohio’s endangered wildlife.

Typically, more than 1,000 persons attend the Wildlife Diversity Conference, which will be held at the Ohio Union on the campus of Ohio State University. The address is 1739 N. High St., Columbus.

Delta’s Hen House Program Helps Mallards

Bismarck, North Dakota — By late spring, more Delta Waterfowl Hen Houses than ever before will be in place to provide safer nest sites for mallards.

Delta’s ever-growing team of 30 Hen House delivery specialists is expected to install 2,218 new nesting structures during the next couple months, while also performing annual maintenance on the existing fleet of 10,775 duck-producing houses. With the latest additions, Delta’s Hen House Program will have nearly 13,000 nest structures in place for the 2024 nesting season in key breeding areas for mallards, including Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.

“We’re setting another Delta program record this winter by adding 2,218 new Hen Houses,” said Matt Chouinard, waterfowl programs director for Delta Waterfowl. “It’s exciting. Our Hen House program growth is expanding duck production capacity across the U.S. and Canadian prairies.”

Delta’s Hen House program began on the Canadian prairie in 1991, when the first structures were installed on Manitoba wetlands.

Nominate Someone For Person of the Year

Delaware, Ohio — It is that time of year again to nominate this year’s Ohio Outdoor News Person of the Year.

Nominations for the award, given over the past 15 years by the publication, will be accepted through the end of February. Nominees should be someone who has made his or her mark in conservation circles, whether through volunteering, mentoring, or leading hunters, anglers, and trappers.
