Allegheny chosen as Pennsylvania’s 2024 River of the Year

The Allegheny River has been voted 2024 River of the Year in an online competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and administered by the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers.
The 325-mile western Pennsylvania waterway garnered 8,307 nods to beat the neighboring Youghiogheny River (7,212 votes), and the Lackawaxen River (4,740) in the northeast region.

Two Pennsylvania men found guilty of bird poisonings

A Beaver County, Pa, farm operator and one of his employees were found guilty in federal court Jan. 25 on three counts related to the unlawful killing of protected migratory birds.
Robert Yost, 52, of New Castle, and Jacob Reese, 27, of Enon Valley, both in Lawrence County, were convicted of poisoning 17 Canada geese, 10 red-winged blackbirds and a mallard duck with corn coated with carbofuran, a registered restricted-use pesticide, in June 2020. The verdict came 15 months after their October 2022 trial.

Buzzards’ early return to Ohio a sign of an early spring?

Myth has it that turkey vultures return to Ohio when the state greens up. On the way home from town, just passing the old quarry, I could hardly believe my eyes – buzzards soaring! So soon, on Feb. 8!
In all my 50 years of watching these great soaring raptors – more properly known as turkey vultures – around Froggy Bottom environs, I have not seen them return for spring so early.
