Warm weather forces park officials to suspend Isle Royale wolf count for first time in decades

A stretch of unusually warm weather has forced federal officials to suspend researchers’ annual wolf-moose count in Isle Royale National Park for the first time in more than six decades.
Isle Royale is a 134,000-acre (54,200-hectare) island situated in far western Lake Superior between Grand Marais, Minnesota, and Thunder Bay, Canada. The park is a wildlife biologist’s dream — it offers a rare opportunity to observe wolves and moose acting naturally without human influence.

The book on Ruth Lake in Minnesota’s Crow Wing County: plentiful largemouths, panfish, pike

The first thing that stands out about Crow Wing County’s Ruth Lake is its 600 acres of amazingly clear water. It’s historically had water clarity of 20 feet or more, and it does to this day.
The lake also features some good structure, including several pronounced points, bars, sharp breaks, rock, gravel, and vegetation. At first glance, Ruth looks like it should be an excellent walleye fishery, but it’s more noted for producing largemouth bass, panfish, and northern pike.

Steve Carney: Poor ice conditions disrupt potential great second half to ice-fishing season in Minnesota

It’s hard to believe ice conditions are regressing so early, so quickly. But that’s what we get with extremely warm weather in January and now February. The recent warm stretch was probably the longest I’ve experienced in late January and early February, and it really has disrupted what potentially appeared to be a great second half of the ice-fishing season.

St. Croix River fishing regulations in ’24 will have two sets of rules from Wisconsin, Minnesota

The St. Croix River will see fishing regulation changes on the Wisconsin side, but Minnesota will remain the same this year. The two states had been working on changing some regulations for daily bag limits and fish refuges. Wisconsin was able to complete the process before the upcoming year, while Minnesota couldn’t finish in time.
Shannon Fisher, Minnesota DNR fisheries populations monitoring and regulations manager, said 2024 will have some differences, but he anticipates similar regulations for the states in 2025.
