Steve Weisman: Longtime baitshops leave their mark on fishing in Iowa Great Lakes region

When I moved to northwest Iowa in 1978, I was amazed at the incredible fishing history surrounding the Iowa Great Lakes and the many fishing legends that had made the lakes one of the go-to places in the Midwest.
My son, Curt was only two years old at the time of our move, but he already had a passion for anything having to do with the outdoors and loved to tag along. Although I grew up fishing in South Dakota, these lakes were an entirely different deal. So, where do you go to learn? The local baitshops.

Ralph Loos: Anti-bobcat season arguments ignore what bowhunters see in Illinois

Shooting the bull with hunters and anglers at the Schaumburg show this time last year, I grew slightly suspicious about the number of times the word “bobcat” was inserted into what were otherwise predator-free conversations.
“What’s up with all the bobcat sightings up here?” was the general tone, with “up here” referring to northern Illinois.

Muskrats cause damage to Iowa’s Sauk Rail Trail, dike

Repairs are expected to take place on a section of a deteriorated Sac County trail after letters from trail users describing its deterioration were discussed at the January meeting of the Iowa Natural Resources Commission.
At issue is a concrete roadway atop a .7-mile section of the Sauk Rail Trail near Lake View, Iowa. The affected dike allows water to be held in the Blackhawk Marsh Wildlife Management Area (WMA), removing sediment and nutrients before entering Blackhawk Lake.

New York gun show promoter, Sandy Ackerman, retires (sort-of)

When the Syracuse Gun Show takes place in April, there will be a new person calling the shots. But for those familiar with the New York State Arms Collectors Association Inc., it won’t be an unfamiliar face.
After more that 40 years with the NYSACA, and nearly two decades of promoting large-scale gun shows in Albany and Syracuse, Sandy Ackerman is retiring as show promoter and board member of the organization. She, and the group’s board members, have also decided to fold the organization. The show, or shows, however will go on.
