122 people rescued from Upper Red Lake ice chunk on Dec. 29

More than 100 people stranded while fishing on an ice chunk that broke free on a Minnesota river were rescued Friday, authorities said.
The anglers were on an ice floe in the southeastern area of Upper Red Lake in Beltrami County – about 200 miles northwest of Minneapolis – when it broke loose from the shoreline. An emergency call shortly before 5 p.m. said the people were stranded with more than 30 feet (9 meters) separating them from shore, according to a statement by the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office.

Kent Weil: Trapping the elusive mink requires scouting and strategy

The fact that I caught my first mink at the age of 12 in a set I specifically made for mink made me very proud.
It still does, because there is a lot of work and strategy involved for a kid to pull that off. Some scouting (sometimes a lot of scouting), recognizing the mink sign, choosing an appropriate trap, and most of all, the boundless enthusiasm of a novice trapper all came together for me to catch what was then – and mostly still is – my ultimate prize.

Here are ways to honor the legacy of hunting, fishing companions

The end of the year and that longest night of Winter Solstice always tend to make me a little maudlin and introspective. It’s often a time when I miss my now-gone outdoor companions the most. I reflect on the memories I have enjoyed making over the years with those friends.
I also tend to think of how we can memorialize our late outdoor friends and companions.

Case review: Water levels continued to be a big story for Minnesota lakes in 2023

Once again, weather influenced lakes and lake biology in 2023. Before ice-up in 2022, water levels in some shallow ponds were so low we couldn’t set trap nets for fish surveys. In fact, lake water levels across the state were low.
At the start of 2023, the snowpack was above average, and as the winter progressed, I wondered if low lake levels, thick ice, and above-average snowpack would produce significant winterkill conditions.

Ohio Insider: Wind turbines on Lake Erie stalled

It appears as though the pilot project to put electricity-producing wind turbines on Lake Erie has hit a major snag.
According to a comprehensive story published in The Plain Dealer of Cleveland in December, the company behind the proposed wind project on the lake has halted its plans. The Lake Erie Energy Development Corp. (LEEDCo) cited rising costs and other challenges in putting the plans on hold.
