Nature Smart: Southern flying squirrels a good reminder of population swings in nature

The population of any given animal species in nature increases or decreases over time in a geographic area. This is how nature works.
These are the ebbs and flows of nature. I was reminded of this on a recent night while I stood outside my house in the dark and cold, watching flying squirrels in my yard. They’re a good example of these classic population swings.

Backyard and Beyond: Living in the Moment

“The blue jay flashed beneath the trees, gay and cocksure as ever, he had no cares or worries about his place in the wilderness picture. Whether or not he survived today, this moment he would tell the world what he thought, and challenge all comers, including the snow and cold.

Top black bear hunting cartridges for 2024

Black bear hunters are endlessly trying to figure out which rifle/cartridge/bullet is best, and we have the simple answer: most all of them.
I’m being facetious here, but to make a point: black bears are not tanks. Most whitetail cartridges suffice for terminating black bears. The bullets, however, sometimes leave much to be desired, specifically having adequate expansion, coupled with penetration.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signs legislation banning coyote hunting contests

Claiming she was protecting wildlife, Gov. Kathy Hochul on Dec. 22, 2023, signed legislation that will put an end to organized coyote hunting contests in the state.

The bill, S.4099/A.2917, was passed by both houses earlier this year and was among several bills sent to the governor ahead of the Christmas holiday. The bill amends the environmental conservation law to make certain hunting contests, competitions, tournaments, and derbies that allow for the take of large numbers of wildlife unlawful.

Party animals: Does some wildlife chase intoxication?

The other day, I read a report in the Wyoming-based Cowboy State Daily about grizzly bears and trains. The article relates that the bears had been eating fermented grain spilled from rail cars and then going to sleep on the tracks.
According to the engineers, “It’s a game of chicken between drunk grizzlies and trains, and the bears lose every time.”

Can microorganisms control a deer’s behavior?

The more you learn about nature, the weirder it becomes. Take the case of the “zombie” parasite Cordyceps. Spores from this fungus end up on an ant in a tropical forest. The spores take over the ant, infiltrating its muscles, causing it to move to a warm, humid place, and to lock its jaws into a plant.
The ant is no longer in control of its behavior. I might wish that this sort of behavior stops with ants and fungi. But alas, it doesn’t.
